πŸ’š Today is World Mental Health Day πŸ’š

Mental health problems are a growing public health concern. They are prevalent not just in the UK, but around the world. Below are some facts taken from the Mental Health Foundation:

β€’ Mental health problems are one of the main causes of the overall disease burden worldwide.
β€’ Mental health and behavioural problems (e.g. depression, anxiety and drug use) are reported to be the primary drivers of disability worldwide, causing over 40 million years of disability in 20 to 29-year-olds.
β€’ Major depression is thought to be the second leading cause of disability worldwide and a major contributor to the burden of su***de and ischemic heart disease.
β€’ It is estimated that 1 in 6 people in the past week experienced a common mental health problem.

If you are struggling or just don't feel 'quite right' please remember to talk. Whether it's a family member, a friend, a professional, a stranger....anyone!

As the saying goes "a problem shared, is a problem halved" and although your problem may not be solved, just talking may help you get the support that's needed. Always remember that although not every day is a good day, there is something good in every day. Keep moving! πŸ’ͺπŸΌπŸ’š

It is easier to just settle because it's comfortable & you know what is expected, than it is to put your hands up and say "enough is enough, something needs to change."

Nothing new grows from within your comfort zone. If you want to grow & see change, you must challenge yourself.

It doesn't matter how big or small those challenges are, if it's scary to you, it will help you overcome, grow & flourish in time. πŸ–€πŸ’šπŸ€

Just stroking a dog can decrease your cortisol (stress) level and help increase serotonin (mood regulation/memory) & dopamine (emotional response) levels, leading you to become calm & relaxed. 😌

Walking a dog also helps increase endorphins, helping fight pain & boost pleasure. πŸ•

Overall, dogs are amazing & can help combat stress, anxiety, depression & many other aspects of mental health. πŸ₯°

❓Did you know❓

The human brain is biologically predisposed towards negative thinking.

This is because negative information causes a surge in activity in a critical information processing area of the brain.

Our behaviors and attitudes tend to be shaped more powerfully by bad news, experiences, and information.

BUT we can rewire our brains to think happier thoughts & not always concentrate on the negatives.

Try:
β€’ finding the positives in any given situation (even if you don't initially see any)
β€’ setting a goal, no matter how small, each day
β€’ enjoying fresh air with a walk (even if this needs to be a short walk a part of your daily goal)
β€’ stopping saying things like "I'll be happy when"
β€’ taking time to write & reflect
β€’ remembering what you have instead of focusing on what you don't have
β€’ doing a random act of kindness
β€’ mediation (YouTube is a great place to start!)

One thing you have to learn is that it is ok to put yourself first, say no to people, have a rest when your body is screaming at you to just sit down & do nothing!

Never think that you are letting people down, you're lazy or that you're failing.

Look after yourself first, make your health & happiness priority xx
