Tunstall, 50, is far from the only artist to experience deafness. “Many musicians reached out and said, ‘I can’t hear either.’” And yet not many of them talk about it. “It’s weird, there’s a taboo,”
She thinks she first damaged her hearing sitting near the front at a Spice Girls concert in 2008 after a long-haul flight: the next morning she noticed a terrible ringing. “It just didn’t stop. And then I realised I couldn’t really hear the shower or the indicator on the car … I couldn’t really hear people very clearly talking on this side. I got a test and I’d lost quite a lot of top-end hearing.”

The singer fears for the future of the business — and talks about the deafness and tinnitus which has dogged her for the past seven years

Halfway point reached in Wellington Orbit renovation

The second phase of the Wellington Orbit's renovation has hit the halfway mark, with significant progress made to redevelop the historic building on Station Road.

The upper floors of the cinema are being brought back into active use, creating adaptable, inclusive spaces for the community in Wellington.

These works mark a major step forward in realising Wellington Orbit's long-term vision to enhance its facilities.

The entire project, which began with the opening of the ground-floor cinema and café in 2019, is set to be completed in 2026.

Local contractor Pave Aways is delivering the project, with Telford & Wrekin Council's Building Innovation Telford (BiT) managing the process.

The project is backed by part of the£9.8m of government funding secured by Telford & Wrekin Council in 2023.

This money is being used to invest in key assets essential to Wellington’s cultural, retail, and leisure economy, including the Orbit.

Significant progress in recent months includes essential roof repairs and the installation of new windows. The roof structure is now stabilised and reinforced after decayed timber was replaced.

The new timber window frames and double-glazing align with conservation area standards, which will improve heating efficiency and reduce noise.

Inside, structural changes are progressing well, with first-floor partitions, ceilings, and mechanical/electrical installations taking shape. Toilet blocks, stairways, and the boardroom are also starting to develop.

The vaulted ceiling in the studio space is nearing completion, highlighting the potential for multi-functional activities in the future.

A new lift, funded by the Veolia Environmental Trust, is due to be installed later this month. This will be an important milestone, providing full access to the entire building.

Wellington Orbit is exploring ways to involve the community, particularly apprentices and students, to decorate the new spaces later this year. This will create new local opportunities for people to get involved in the project.

Councillor Ollie Vickers, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for the Economy and Transport, said: “Each phase of the Wellington Orbit project brings us closer to a vibrant, multi-purpose cultural hub for Wellington, a place where everyone is welcome and inspired."

He added: “Having these additional spaces in a building at the heart of the town can only enhance what Wellington has to offer and drive more footfall to the town.”

‼ Binfo
🍅 🍞 🍌 Over the next two weeks our crews will be raising awareness of food waste recycling. If you see an information hanger on your red top bin, it's to help you order a free food caddy. It will be delivered to your door and then collected every week for free.

At the moment only 40% of residents recycle food waste and we really want to increase that because recycling food waste creates energy and compost for growing more food 👍

Please see comments for a link to more information about food waste recycling 👇👇
