September is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month! 💜🧠

World Alzheimer's Month takes place every September and World Alzheimer's Day is on 21st September each year. It's a global opportunity to raise dementia awareness and support people affected by the disease.

Each September, people unite from all corners of the world to raise awareness and to challenge the stigma that persists around Alzheimer’s disease and all types of dementia.

Why does Alzheimer’s Awareness Month matter❓

Today, nearly one million people in the UK live with dementia. That’s almost a million families living with the condition. Yet too often their voices go unheard.

This World Alzheimer’s Month Dementia UK are amplifying those millions of voices – people living with dementia, their carers, their families and their friends.

This World Alzheimer’s Month, we're shining a light on conversations about dementia – moments of honesty, connection and courage. 💪

Dementia will affect one in two of us, either by developing it or caring for someone we love. Yet too many people still face the challenges alone. 👤

Talking about dementia – whether with family, friends or one of our specialist Admiral Nurses – can make a world of difference.

This time of year can feel like a mix of emotions; excitement, nerves, and a little bit of “where did the summer go?” To support both children and parents during this transition, here are some gentle reminders:
✨ Slow down where you can – enjoy simple moments together, like a walk, a picnic, or reading a story.
✨ Talk openly – check in with your child (and yourself) about how you’re both feeling about September.
✨ Ease back into routines – earlier bedtimes and calmer evenings can help everyone adjust more smoothly.
✨ Let go of perfection – things don’t need to run perfectly straight away; it’s about finding your rhythm.
✨ Don’t forget you – small acts of self-care for parents and carers matter too.

🌀 Let’s talk about decompression.
After a long shift or a challenging day, it’s important to give yourself space to breathe, reset, and decompress.
Decompression isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity for wellbeing, especially in roles that involve emotional labour, high stress, or caring for others.

Some days, we may need to lean on more decompression techniques than usual — and that’s okay. Give yourself the space and grace to take care of your mental health, especially if you work in mental health, like our incredible Support Workers do. 💚

Here are a few ways to decompress after work:
💆🏽 Light movement like stretching or walking
🎧 Listening to calming music or a favourite podcast
🛁 Taking a warm bath or shower to symbolically “wash the day off”
📖 Getting lost in a book or a creative hobby
🧘🏿 Practising mindfulness or deep breathing
📱 Or simply disconnecting from screens for a while

Whatever helps you unwind — do it with intention and without guilt. You deserve rest.

Cats can significantly contribute to improving mental health. Studies and surveys indicate that cat ownership is linked to reduced stress, anxiety, and depression, and can even help with feelings of loneliness!
