The Challenge Anneka had a fundamental impact on the approach going forward for the Hidden Homeless / Rough Sleeping in Telford.
Together, the people of Telford and Wrekin have assisted us by their support to achieve 35 years of preventative response across the borough,to what is a national crisis of homelessness and rough sleeping.
Local residents coming together to assist Anneka to create a place of refuge for vulnerable homeless young people.
We recognised then, and now, the complexity of life and its impact on so many individuals, leaving them without the basic needs, as identified by Maslows Hierarchy of Need.
We have learnt that a โOne Size Fits Allโ response does not work. We have learned to better understand and not judge those struggling with:-
Neurodivergence, ADHD, Addiction, Poor Mental Health, Relationships Breakdown, Loss of Employment, Debt, and Loss are some of the contributing factors.
Despite the local house building program, it still falls short of need for
accessible affordable housing, the development of HMOโs is a clear indicator of this.
The local Challenge Anneka helped to bring to the public the plight of rough sleeping for young people, and 15 years later KiP (Telford) started to address this for those over 25 and now 18 + year olds.
So today we acknowledge those who have established and continue to provide for the homeless.
