Thank you David Oakley and A Box of Tricks for visiting us every month!

✨🪄✨🪄✨🪄✨

There are always lots of smiles when David Oakley and A Box of Tricks visits The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. Youth Worker, Kerry says, "David's visits provide a real distraction to our patients and their families, especially for those children who have been in hospital for sometime. He makes a real difference to all of our patients, going over and above to make them feel at ease, engaging them in his shows and brightening up their day! A massive thank you to Ironbridge Lions Club for funding our visits."

David's magic appeals to all ages. After March's visit, there were these comments from parents of nine-year-olds, "Amazing! Made my son feel at ease and stopped him from worrying about the appointment for bloods. Thank you so much for doing this for children - incredible job" and "David was brilliant and cheered my daughter up. It was lovely to see her laughing - made a huge difference. Thank you." The verdict of two 15-year-olds was: "It went very well. He was very funny and great magic - fantastic!" and "Very positive and very funny made me feel happy." And here are two younger children who also enjoyed the magic.

It’s that time of year again when mini eggs are lining the supermarket shelves. But, did you know that, just like grapes, they are the perfect size to block a small child’s airway and choke them? And, their hard shell can make it difficult to dislodge with standard first aid techniques.

With whole grapes we advise cutting them in half lengthways and ideally into quarters to create thin strips. But chopping up mini eggs isn’t as easy. So, what can you do?

1. Hide them from the children and eat them yourself – good luck with that!

2. Break them into small pieces with a rolling pin. Or, crush them in a pestle and mortar. Or melt them a little first.

3. Opt for a different treat. Larger, hollow eggs are much safer for little ones.

For more practical tips and advice to keep children safe from choking take a look at our guide: https://capt.org.uk/resources/choking-fact-sheet/
