The nervous system is our body’s communication network, with two key branches: the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) (responsible for "fight, flight, or freeze" responses) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) (which supports "rest, digest, and repair"). When we experience trauma—whether a single acute event or ongoing stress—the SNS may become stuck in an activated state, or the body may enter a prolonged freeze response if escape or defense feels impossible.

Rather than being stored as a "memory" in the brain alone, trauma can lodge in the body as physical tension, altered breathing patterns, or persistent activation. This happens because the nervous system doesn’t fully complete its stress response cycle; the energy generated to defend or escape doesn’t get released, leaving the body in a state of unresolved arousal. Over time, this can lead to symptoms like anxiety, chronic pain, sleep issues, or emotional numbness.

How to Release Trauma from the Nervous System

Here are evidence-based approaches to help restore balance:

1. Complete the Stress Response Cycle
