Could movement help protect your body from cancer?

It might sound surprising, but there’s growing research showing that regular movement plays a role in reducing the risk of several common cancers — including breast, bowel, and womb cancer.

It’s not just about fitness or fat loss. It’s about how movement affects:
✔️ Hormone regulation
✔️ Inflammation levels
✔️ Immune system function

Even gentle, consistent activity has benefits — especially when paired with rest, recovery, and support from therapies like massage.

We see the positive effects of movement every day at Massage Matters.
If you’d like to move more, but don’t know where to start — we can help.

Gardening: Joy, Graft… and the Occasional Twinge 🌱

There’s nothing quite like getting stuck into the garden — the rhythm, the satisfaction, the connection to nature.

But we also know it comes with its physical costs.
We often treat gardening-related issues, especially at this time of year:
✔️ Lower back aches
✔️ Tight shoulders
✔️ Sore wrists or knees

Massage can help ease the strain after a big dig — and it can also help prevent problems when it’s part of your regular care.

So if your body’s feeling the aftershock of a few hours in the flower beds… we’re here to help. 🌼

Move Well, Feel Better: Why Massage and Pilates Are Better Together

Massage is amazing for releasing tight tissues, easing pain, and improving how your body moves. But what comes after that? That’s where Pilates comes in — helping you retrain your movement, build control, and strengthen what’s been released.

At Massage Matters, we often recommend combining both approaches to support long-term change, especially for those recovering from injury or persistent discomfort.

🧠 It’s not just about relaxing muscles — it’s about changing how you move.

If you're curious about how Pilates and massage could work for you, just ask us at your next appointment — we’re happy to chat through options.

Arthritis: The Link Between Diet & Inflammation
How Diet, Inflammation, and Lifestyle Choices Impact Arthritis and Effective Ways to Manage Symptoms

As a physical therapist, arthritis is always on my mind. I use my hands for work daily and have a family history of osteoarthritis, so it’s a subject that concerns me greatly! Recently, I listened to an insightful ZOE podcast with Professor Tamiko Katsumoto, an expert in immunology and rheumatology at Stanford University, and wanted to share some key takeaways. Please note, this is my interpretation of the podcast, not my personal opinion.

Arthritis is becoming more common, and this trend shows no sign of slowing. Professor Katsumoto highlights how the incidence of arthritis is rising, stressing the significant role diet plays in its development. For decades, we’ve focused on genetic factors and lifestyle habits like smoking as the main drivers of chronic diseases.

Stay Injury-Free This Spring with Prehab
Prevent injuries with prehab. Strength training, stretching, and massage keep you strong, mobile, and pain-free.

I have been an avid runner and tennis player for a number of years, and inevitably I have suffered injuries that have left me sidelined and feeling glum. As I write this, I have pain in my left shoulder from playing tennis a week or so ago that I am rehabilitating to bring it back to full strength. As someone who has had numerous injuries throughout his life—from broken bones to tendinopathy—I know both the physical and mental strain an injury can have on all of us. While we can’t always prevent injuries, we can take steps to reduce our risk and avoid spending time sidelined, unable to play the sport we love. Or even struggling to do something as simple as reaching for a bag of sugar on the top shelf without pain.
