West Berkshire Therapy Centre

West Berkshire Therapy Centre A very specialised gym, for the benefit of disabled people from the local community. Our premises are just off Lower Way in Thatcham, so are easy to get to.

West Berkshire Therapy Centre is located half way between Newbury and Thatcham. It is a very specialised gym, equipped with power-assisted exercise equipment, for the benefit of disabled people from the local community. Our extensive research has shown that this facility will help people who suffer from a wide range of disabling conditions:
neurological disorders,
arthritis,
strokes,
cardiac o

r lung problems,
dementia,
post-operative rehabilitation,
learning difficulties and many others. Following assessment from one of our registered physiotherapists, Centre users will be able to receive exercise therapy provided by a range of carefully designed and selected machines, easing stiff or reluctant muscles, giving them more strength and co-ordination, helping also to manage weight, improve circulation, reduce the risks of serious health problems in later years and more feelings of well-being. We have considerable support from many local voluntary groups and many local clinicians. Everything is on the ground floor, including a disabled loo and a small rest area. There is space for those in wheelchairs to get around and although the equipment is motorised, to provide the exercise therapy, it is quiet and enjoyable to use. Our staff will give a helping hand if needed and carers will be welcome. We are a not for profit charitable organisation and invite voluntary contributions at the lowest rates compatible with providing an excellent service for as many people as possible. We can also offer slight discounts to those who take out membership. All offers of help will be welcome. You can support us with a donation via our website: http://www.westberkshiretherapycentre.org.uk/

Many disabled people find it difficult to take as much exercise as they want or as is generally recommended. Our power-assisted equipment provides the opportunity to move every major muscle in the body, with the equipment doing the work, so even very weak muscles can be exercised without effort from you. Not only is this generally good for your overall health, but the stronger you can get, the easier it is likely to be for you to carry out important tasks of daily living in safety and comfort. In due course we would also like to offer a community hydrotherapy pool. This needs a larger building and we continue to seek offers of help to secure a suitable plot of land. In the meantime our specialised power-assisted equipment may be able to make a big difference to your overall well-being. We are grateful for the support of:

Dementia looks different for everyone, and symptoms will also be different depending on what kind of dementia someone has.

Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies are four of the most common forms of dementia, and they can all affect people differently. This is our guide to a few of the most common symptoms for each illness.

By knowing the signs, we can make sure that we don’t brush off or ignore some of these lesser-known symptoms, to help everyone with dementia get a crucial early diagnosis.

Save this post for later, and if you’d like more info visit our website or give our Dementia Support Line a call on 0333 150 3456.

We have good news, new equipment is being installed. We wish to thank Berkshire Community Foundation, Tesco Stronger Starts and the Berkshire Nurses Relief in Sickness Trust for supporting us to buy these bespoke machines.

Among the first to try out the new machines is Therapy Centre client Gerry, who immediately took to the 'Climber'. “The electronics are clearer than on the older machines” he said. “The footrests are better and comfortable, this machine helps me to strengthen my legs and arms and I can exercise both at the same time. It's stable and strong, I feel safe on it. It's easy, it's fun”.

The next-generation 'Rower' is also proving a winner with users.

Said Tony: “I like that I can use both arms and legs at the same time; I can give it a good strong push and pull. It's stable and I can feel my muscles work.”

Lisa's opinion: “It's good to be seated because of my balance issues; the machine is strong and stable, I feel safe, I know I'm not going to fall off”.

What a turn out!..close to 200 people spared their time on a sunny afternoon and gave such fantastic feedback and found it so useful.

At the centre in Bristol, talking at the event on Trauma informed care. Lovely day, great location and fantastic speakers. A great location for healing and connect.

My talk is going to be on a topic I am passionate about - the need for more trauma informed lens when we look after Chronic pain patients.
