Learning to drive with special educational needs or autism 🚘🌟

SEND and Autism can bring unique challenges to driving, like difficulties with coordination or distraction. But many individuals with SEND can have many strengths, including following the rules of the road, paying close attention to their driving environment and limiting risk taking. With the right support, they can become safe and confident drivers!

At EAD, we offer Potential to Learn to Drive Assessments for individuals with autism and special educational needs. Our assessors evaluate cognitive, physical, and in-car abilities. We will also provide a report, which can be sent to the DVLA to support the application of a provisional licence.

🚗 What to Expect from a Driving Assessment

Our on-road driving assessments are designed to reflect real-world conditions, so we can accurately understand how your medical condition or disability may affect your driving.
You’ll drive a dual-controlled vehicle alongside a specialist occupational therapist and an approved driving instructor. This allows us to:

✅ Assess your physical and cognitive responses in real-time
✅ Recommend adaptations to support you behind the wheel
✅ Help inform DVLA decisions about your fitness to drive

Driving Mobility and the Motability Foundation Report Paves the Way for More Inclusive Driving Tuition Across the UK

We’re proud to announce the launch of our new report:
📘 “Exploring barriers to the access and provision of specialist driving tuition for a diverse range of learner driver needs across the UK.”

🚗 Over 600 Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) shared their insights, identifying key barriers and opportunities to make specialist driver training more inclusive and accessible.

The report outlines seven thematic findings and 27 recommendations to help shape a more equitable future for driver training — from financial support and training access to regional equity and learner inclusion.

This week, we’re celebrating our amazing Occupational Therapists (OTs) at East Anglian DriveAbility, who play a vital role in helping people retain their mobility and independence every day.

Our OTs are at the heart of what we do, supporting clients in a variety of ways, such as:
👉 Assessment expertise – They assess physical, cognitive, and visual abilities to help determine fitness to drive and ensure safety behind the wheel.

👉 Finding solutions – From vehicle adaptations and driving aids to alternative mobility options, OTs identify practical solutions tailored to each person’s needs.

💜 World Stroke Day — Regaining Independence After a Stroke

Every day in the UK, 240 people experience a stroke. While the effects can be life-changing, recovery is possible and regaining independence is a huge part of that journey.

At East Anglian DriveAbility, we help stroke survivors rebuild confidence and stay mobile through:

🚗 Driving assessments – assessing safe driving and identifying adaptations like hand controls or steering spinners.
🚙 Car access assessments – helping you get in and out of your vehicle safely and comfortably, recommending practical solutions like seating aids, posture support, or wheelchair loading options.
🛵 Mobility scooter assessments – impartial advice on the right scooter, and provide training to build confidence and independence.

Two years ago, Kim had a stroke that left her with limited movement in her left arm and hand. Determined to stay independent, she found EAD online and came for a driving assessment.

“I really wanted to drive again and get some independence back… The assessors were understanding and very patient. They reassured me, which gave me confidence.”

With support and a steering spinner, an adaptation on the steering wheel that enables steering with one hand, Kim passed her assessment and was able to return to driving.

Take some of our top tips to

Drivers
• Ensure you can see clearly out of your windscreen
• Make sure all lights are working, and mirrors are clean
• Use headlights whenever visibility is reduced especially when dark and raining
• Check the condition of wipers and washers
• Take extra care to look out for pedestrians, children and two-wheel vehicles.

Ken’s Journey: Back on the Road After a Stroke 🚗

After suffering a stroke in 2023, leaving him with vision loss, Ken had his license revoked by DVLA. This had a huge impact on his daily life.

Determined to regain his independence, Ken found East Anglian DriveAbility online. With support from our assessors, he completed an initial assessment and after some training with a driving instructor to rebuild his confidence, Ken was able to have a driving assessment.
"I am very pleased to report that I received my full driving licence for a further three years… The help you and your team have given me has been exceptional, and without your assistance, I would never have had the chance to get my life back on track. The whole experience with you has been amazing. I have learned so much from your guidance and advice and if ever I have to go through this again I would not hesitate to contact you again.”

💛 Supporting a Loved One After a Dementia Diagnosis

Hearing the word dementia can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to mean losing independence overnight.

If someone you love has recently been diagnosed, here are a few steps to help keep them safe, supported and independent:

🚗 Talk about driving early. Honest conversations help everyone plan ahead without fear or pressure.

👉 Book a driving assessment. Dementia can affect driving skills gradually over time. An assessment checks current ability and helps identify the right time to retire from driving, safely and confidently.

🤝 Involve them in decisions. Independence isn’t just about driving but also about feeling in control.

At East Anglian DriveAbility, we’re accredited by driving mobility to provide professional driving assessments. Our friendly team of occupational therapists and driving instructors will assess cognitive, physical, visual and in-car abilities to give clear advice and provide a written report for the DVLA. We also offer 6 monthly reassessments to monitor drivers living with dementia.
When it’s time to retire we will help explore alternatives to keep some independence.
