🚗 What is a Fitness to Drive Assessment?

At East Anglian DriveAbility, our Fitness to Drive assessments are designed to support people whose medical condition, injury, or change in ability may be affecting their driving.

During a Fitness to Drive assessment, we look at:
✔️ Your medical history and how this may impact driving
✔️ Vision, concentration, and decision-making skills
✔️ Physical movement, strength, and coordination
✔️ Reaction times and ability to manage vehicle controls
✔️ An on-road drive in one of our dual-controlled vehicles (where appropriate)

Our specialist team provides a supportive and professional environment, helping you understand how your condition may affect driving. Following the assessment, we’ll discuss the outcome with you and provide clear recommendations. This may include continuing to drive, considering vehicle adaptations, building confidence, or exploring alternative transport options.

The aim is always to support safe driving while helping you maintain independence wherever possible.

If you think a Fitness to Drive assessment could help you or someone you support, get in touch to learn more.

7. 💪🧠 Muscle Memory Helps Experienced Drivers!

Many driving actions become automatic over time thanks to the brain’s procedural memory — the same system that helps us ride a bike or type without looking at the keyboard.

This “muscle memory” helps drivers:
Change gears
Check mirrors
Steer smoothly
Coordinate pedals

But illness, injury, or neurological conditions can sometimes disrupt these automatic processes.

💡 That’s where specialist advice can help. East Anglian DriveAbility works with drivers to explore adaptations, training, or strategies that can support safe and independent driving.

6. 👀🧠🚙 Your Brain Filters Huge Amounts of Information While Driving!

Every second on the road, your brain receives far more information than it can consciously process — traffic lights, road signs, pedestrians, mirrors, speed, sounds, and movement.

To cope with this, the brain constantly filters and prioritises what matters most so you can react quickly and safely.

Certain medical conditions or neurological changes can make this filtering process harder, which may affect driving performance.

🚗 East Anglian DriveAbility offers specialist driving assessments to help people understand how their condition may affect driving and what support or adaptations might help.

5. Confidence Is a Brain Skill Too! 😣🧠

Driving confidence isn’t just emotional — it’s linked to how the brain processes risk, attention, and decision-making.

After illness or injury, it’s common for drivers to feel uncertain about getting back on the road.

With the right guidance, assessment, and adaptive equipment, many people regain both skills and confidence.

🚘 East Anglian DriveAbility supports drivers every step of the way — helping people maintain independence while staying safe.

4. 🫩🧠Fatigue Can Affect the Brain Like Alcohol!

Mental fatigue slows reaction times and decision-making in ways that can mimic alcohol impairment.

For people with certain neurological conditions, fatigue can happen more quickly while driving.

That’s why awareness, pacing, and professional advice can be so important.

👉East Anglian DriveAbility helps drivers understand how their condition may affect fatigue, attention, and safety on the road.
