Driving with dementia

A dementia diagnosis doesn’t mean the end of independence, but it’s important to know when extra support is needed, especially around everyday tasks like driving.

If you or a loved one has recently been diagnosed, you might be wondering:
👉 Is it still safe for them to drive?
👉 How can we make informed choices without their losing independence too soon?

At East Anglian Driveability, we offer professional, supportive driving assessments to help answer these difficult questions. Our aim is to keep people driving safely, for as long as possible, and support families when the time comes to explore alternatives.

✅ We assess cognitive, visual and physical abilities in a calm, understanding environment.
✅ We advise on potential adaptations to help with safe driving.
✅ And when driving is no longer safe, we support you to explore other ways to stay mobile and independent.

We’re here to help you make confident, informed decisions about driving with dementia

🚗 What to expect from a driving assessment

Our driving assessments are designed to help you stay safe, confident, and independent on the road. The assessment will include some cognitive table top tasks, mobility and vision checks, and a short drive in a dual-controlled car with an instructor.

This allows us to:
✅ Assess your physical and cognitive responses to ensure safety when driving
✅ Recommend any adaptations to support your driving
✅ Provide written report for the DVLA

Whilst an ‘assessment’ can sound nerve-wracking, our team are supportive and try to put you at ease so we can best support you in having independent mobility:
🗣 “The assessment was a great experience, very relaxed and very friendly. They couldn’t be more helpful letting you know about all the adaptations. The whole experience was fantastic and all about helping you safely and comfortably get your independence back.”

🚗 From nerves to confidence behind the wheel 🚗

One of our clients shared how anxious they felt before their driving assessment, but with the support of our friendly team, Dawn and Del, they have left feeling more confident behind the wheel.

“I was very anxious, but Dawn and Del put me instantly at ease. The first desk-based assessment went well, which made me more relaxed. I then went out on the road… Dawn and Del made this challenge the best it could be, and overall, it has made me more confident in my driving ability.”

👏 We love hearing stories like this, our goal is always to make assessments supportive, understanding, and confidence-building.

If you or someone you know is feeling unsure about driving after a diagnosis or health change, our team is here to help you feel safe, supported, and ready for the road.

🌟 Did you know that we offer potential to learn assessments for individuals looking to learn to drive who have mobility or cognitive challenges? 🚘

Our team will evaluate cognitive and physical abilities to determine if they have the potential to drive. They will also offer advice on any adaptations and specialist tuition. The assessment can support an application to DVLA for a provisional license.

Below is what one of our clients has to say about our potential to learn assessments:

🗣️ “We attended for my son, who had been declined a provisional due to his autism. On arriving, the staff were all friendly. They explained to both of us what would happen and really put me and my son at ease! My son really struggles with new people, when they returned, I could see that he had enjoyed his time and that the staff had got on well with him! He enjoyed the assessment and is pleased that they could see that he would be able to drive. This is a massive milestone for him, and without this report that we will get from you, he would not be able to drive. So thank you very much!”

👉 We support individuals by championing their independence and helping them safely navigate driving.

Ken’s Journey: Back on the Road After a Stroke 🚗

After suffering a stroke in 2023, leaving him with vision loss, Ken had his license revoked by DVLA. This had a huge impact on his daily life, "My wife does not drive, which meant that we had to rely on buses, walking everywhere, relying on friends and very good neighbours… This became very stressful, not only for me but more importantly for the health of my wife… I had a part time job at our local Aldi Store which I had to give up a year later due to not being able to fulfill my work life balance and not being able to drive."

Determined to regain his independence, Ken found East Anglian DriveAbility online. With support from our assessors, he completed an initial assessment and after some training with a driving instructor to rebuild his confidence, Ken was able to have a driving assessment.

"I am very pleased to report that on the 15/01/25 I received my full driving licence for a further three years… The help you and your team have given me has been exceptional, and without your assistance, I would never have had the chance to get my life back on track. The whole experience with you has been amazing. I have learned so much from your guidance and advice and if ever I have to go through this again I would not hesitate to contact you again.”

Thank you so much for sharing your experience Ken and a big congratulations on your return to driving! 🎉

Did you know? You could get help to keep driving. 🚘

The Driving Assessment Grant (DAG) supported by Motability Foundation helped John adapt his car after Parkinson’s and vertigo made everyday life much harder. With a hoist fitted to make transporting his wheelchair much easier, he has regained the freedom he thought he’d lost.

The grant enabled John to proceed with the adaptation that’s transformed his independence:
“I can now go out by myself. It’s made things much easier.”

If you’re living with a disability or health condition, you may be eligible for grant funding to support a driving assessment or vehicle adaptations.
