If you’re only fixated on the big end goal, you might be accidentally draining your own motivation.

Maybe you want to lose weight, gain some strength and transform your body into a shape you’re proud of. Feel more confident in. And ultimately feel like your old self again.

This sort of BIG health and fitness goal is great.

But if it took years to fall out of shape. It’s not going to be reversed in a matter of weeks.

It’s going to take time. And probably more time than you think it should. More than you think is fair.

And if you overly focus on the end result

-Dropping several clothes sizes. Fitting into an outfit from years ago. Feeling confident wearing a swimming costume in public-

you will go to bed every night for months, having failed to achieve your goal.

❌ Get back in shape.

…not a nice feeling to have.

And unsurprising that you feel deflated and unmotivated within a few days of starting.

Instead, try and put the big goal out of your mind.

Focus on a series of smaller “tick box” goals that you can achieve in a day or in a week:

✅ Set a daily or weekly step target
✅ Strength train 2-3x per week
✅ Eat protein & veg with 2 meals a day
✅ Limit alcohol to weekends only

Tick these boxes and not only will you feel like you’ve achieved something you set out too.

They will feed into your bigger goal and keep you moving toward it.

And at some point, you will be able to check off that long term goal.

✅ Get back in shape.

This is exactly what we do with our personal training clients.

We help them break down their goals into small daily and weekly actionable steps and keep them accountable to doing them.

BIG GOALS matter. But they shouldn’t be the only thing you focus on.

Your workout plan needs to fit your current reality.

Life changes — work hours shift, family responsibilities grow, you travel, get ill, get injured... and that all affects how often you can train, what you can do, and how hard you can go.

That’s why I’m always checking in with clients and adjusting their plans. What worked a few months ago might not work now — and that’s totally fine.

For me, becoming a dad earlier this year has meant less sleep and a lot less free time. So I’ve cut my training down from 5–6 sessions a week (60–90 mins each) to about 3 shorter sessions (40–50 mins), focusing on full-body workouts that keep me ticking over while I find my new rhythm.

If your reality’s shifted recently, make sure your plan does too. Even the best plan can become the wrong one if it doesn’t suit the season you’re in.

Here’s a bit of last week’s training 💪

The end of another in-house JLPT Challenge! 🤩

You see, it’s not enough for us to make our clients suffer just during their sessions — we like to pit them against each other in full Hunger Games-style showdowns.

We’ve watched them go from complete strangers to sworn rivals as they battle it out on the leaderboard, each one desperate to claim victory. 🏆

And what do our champions win for their efforts?

A generous reward — vouchers for the local Greengrocer! Because nothing says “congratulations on your triumph” quite like a basket of fruit and veg. 😂

Amazing work from our client John & his JLPT coach Olly 🤩

5 months in & a whopping 37lbs down! Plus a huge reduction in his blood pressure.

Still more progress to make to have him in peak shape for a monstrous trek next year, but he is fast becoming a lean mean, weight lifting machine!

Well done John & Olly 💪

Why Motivation Is a Load of Sh*t

Even after nearly 14 years as a personal trainer, I still regularly struggle to find the motivation to train after a long day.

Today was one of those days.

I know all the reasons why it’s good for me — physically, mentally, emotionally — but some days, heading home just feels easier.

If you’re someone who constantly struggles to stay consistent, here’s the truth: waiting for motivation to strike isn’t the answer.

You can’t rely on motivation — it’s unreliable as hell.

What does work is structure. Build training into your weekly routine so it becomes non-negotiable — something you just do.

Because those days when you’re tired, you're a bit sore, haven’t eaten enough, or just can’t be arsed?

Those are the days that matter most.

Even if it’s not your best session, showing up reinforces that this is part of your lifestyle — not just something you do when you “feel like it.”

That’s how consistency is built. One unmotivated session at a time.

Here's a little of todays "I'd much rather be at home watching Celebrity Traitors" workout...

Hands up if you own an embarrassingly large amount of Tupperware 🙋‍♂️

One of the hardest parts of eating healthy consistently isn’t motivation — it’s staying organised.

Do you actually have healthy food in the fridge for tomorrow, or did your shop only last halfway through the week?

And now it's getting late & you're convincing yourself that a mid week McDonalds is not only going to save you time, but could be a wise financial investment if you win big on the Monopoly game!

Do you have grab-and-go meals ready, or five spare minutes and a kilo of raw meat plus a bag of uncooked rice?

Bypassing the microwaveable Tilda for the 5kg value bag of uncooked stuff seemed like such a good idea at the time! Supposedly way healthier & cheaper... until a long enough period of time passes that you feel it's ok for you to throw it out.

Healthy eating is largely about staying one step ahead — thinking not just about your next meal, but the one after that. And what you are realistically going to be able to do with the constraints of your busy work & home life.

Consistency isn’t about willpower — it’s about systems.

Plan ahead, meal prep, but be realistic and do your future self a favour.

Because when you’re running late on Wednesday morning, you’ll be SO glad you cooked and tubbed up an extra portion of Monday night’s dinner!

Everyone we train is busy.

They have families. They run businesses.

You’d think being busy is a reason not to train.

But actually, it’s the reason it works.

A set day and time for yourself MAKES it happen.

No talking yourself out of it. No “I’ll go tomorrow” — tomorrow never happens.

Your trainer is waiting. You show up. You move. You push yourself.

That hour becomes yours — a chance to get out of your head, focus on yourself, and recharge.

When life is full-on, these moments of structure and self-care keep you grounded.

Consistency isn’t about motivation. It’s about making your training non-negotiable.

How hard do you REALLY train?

If you're finding the time in amongst your busy life to exercise on regular basis, then WELL DONE.

Because you're already in the minority of people.

BUT, make sure you get the absolute most out of that precious time by working hard.

Pushing yourself out of that all too familiar comfort zone & achieving something new every month 💪
