We recently ran our very first Group Diabetes Medication Review at the practice, led by Dr Veeramasuneni and our Diabetes Nurse Specialist, Anu. It was such an inspiring event โ seeing a (virtual) room full of patients come together to understand their diabetes better and take steps toward feeling healthier.
Group sessions arenโt just a new trend โ theyโre a friendly, supportive way for people to learn together. When patients share a room, conversations happen that donโt always come up in one-to-one appointments. People ask questions, swap tips, and often leave feeling more confident and hopeful.
During the session, we covered:
โข The basics: what diabetes is and how it affects your body.
โข How insulin works: how day-to-day choices can help balance it.
โข Medications: what they do, how to take them safely, and when adjustments might be needed.
โข Practical lifestyle tips: food, exercise, sleep, and stress management strategies that really make a difference.
โข Understanding your numbers: HbA1c, blood glucose readings, and what they mean for you.
โข Encouragement: diabetes doesnโt have to feel overwhelming. With the right support, many people can improve their control โ and for some, even reach remission.
The feedback from patients was fantastic. Many said they felt more informed, more supported, and more hopeful. A lot mentioned how helpful it was to learn alongside others who are on the same journey โ it made everything feel less intimidating and easier to understand.
The room was full of support, and thoughtful discussion. People shared experiences, asked questions, and left with a renewed sense of understanding and confidence.
This is just the beginning! Weโre excited to run more sessions and continue helping our patients in Thornaby and Ingleby Barwick take control of their diabetes with knowledge, support, and community.
