Wow! Certainly wasn't expecting today's wax removal to be quite the size it turned out to be! When looking through the otoscope or video endoscope we only see the outer part of the wax build up so it's hard to tell just how much wax is in the ear until it's all removed and the final results certainly didn't fail to surprise! The client admitted to regular cotton bud use and that the ears have been feeling blocked for around a year!

During your appointment, if your ears are found not to be occluded with wax and you feel as though your hearing has deteriorated, you may be offered a hearing test to help understand why you may feel that you are struggling with your hearing. A thorough history is taken of your hearing health before we proceed with a Pure Tone Audiometry test (PTA).

A PTA test helps understand whether you have a hearing loss and also the types of sounds you may be struggling to hear based on your responses to different tone frequencies at different intensity levels. You will be shown examples of the types of sounds you may or may not hear and a treatment plan will be discussed if required. You will also be able to trial our latest hearing aids if you are interested in hearing aids as an option.

Result!! One of today's wax extractions was a formation of really dry and crusty skin that builds up rapidly deep in this client's ear. This client is a hearing aid user and gets a regular build up in his left ear every few months. In fact, the previous time he visited and had his ear cleared was only in March, meaning the dry skin build up only took a couple of months!

Occasionally some people with dry skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema can get a build up or shedding of dry skin quite rapidly within the ear and because the ear canal is an extremely small area of space, it becomes occluded quickly for them and the skin forms into a plug which prevents sound travelling effectively towards the eardrum. Usually this type of wax can be removed in one large lump as was the case above.

What a whopper!

A side by side comparison of possibly one of the largest wax plugs extracted from one of today's clients. As usual, immediate relief was felt by the client as soon as it was extracted!

Who would've thought the tiny ears of an eight year old would be plugged with such large balls of wax?

Microsuction is a painless and safe method of wax removal, but it can sound a little loud inside the ear! The eight year old was a champion when having the wax removed but exclaimed to his parents (due to the loud sound) that he'll 'never use Crystal Ears again!', before admitting afterwards that it only tickled! 😆

Our wax removal service in action! Wax is gently removed using the microsuction technique, whereby a tiny tube is inserted into the ear to gently suction the wax out of the ear.

Latest ear wax removal, the wax came out as a solid lump that was pretty much plugged into the ear. It's always very satisfying when the wax comes out like this and seeing the patient's reaction after not being able to hear clearly for a while!

Olive oil use for at least 4 days prior to the appointment can soften ear wax and make the whole process of ear wax removal much more comfortable.

The wax from this patient's ears was quite hard and therefore, stubborn to remove. A combination of microsuction, ear hooks and forceps were used to extract the surprising amount of hard wax from this teenager's ears!
