STATEMENT FROM CLAIRE HIGGINS:
_________________
Over recent days there has been significant public commentary relating to the conviction of Chris Higgins. The offence for which he was sentenced was his alone.
It is a serious matter, and I do not condone it in any way. The harm caused is acknowledged, and my thoughts are with all those affected.
From the point of initial arrest, all relevant statutory and safeguarding bodies were informed and involved. Throughout what became a prolonged, complex and evolving situation, I acted in accordance with formal advice and safeguarding guidance provided by the Police, the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO), the Council, and legal professionals. I was explicitly advised not to make public comment during this period.
I am sorry for the distress this situation has caused, particularly for parents and families who may have been shocked or upset by recent reporting and who understandably have questions. I recognise how difficult this has been, and I regret the anxiety caused by circumstances that were largely outside my control.
During this time, safeguarding arrangements were in place at all times. Regular assessments were undertaken, and all decisions relating to the venue were made in line with formal guidance and ongoing advice from the appropriate authorities and legal advisers. At no point did I act independently of that advice.
I wish to be absolutely clear: I have not committed any offence, nor have I acted unlawfully or improperly in my professional role. Every action taken was with the safety and wellbeing of children, young people, staff, volunteers, patrons and visitors as the overriding priority.
Discussions are currently ongoing regarding the future arrangements for the venue. Until any decisions are finalised, I will continue to fulfil my responsibilities with care and professionalism, working constructively with the relevant authorities. Any transition will be handled appropriately and responsibly.
I understand the strength of feeling this situation has caused. I would ask, however, for consideration of the impact on my son and my wider family, who did not ask to be placed in this position.
I am grateful to those who have shown compassion and understanding during what has been one of the most difficult periods of my life. I would also like to thank the theatre’s staff, volunteers, patrons and visitors for their contribution to the venue and its role within the local community.
I will not be engaging in speculation or public discussion on this matter. No further comment will be made.
