Dia Del Galgo: A Day to Remember the Forgotten
Even though Galgos deserve our support all year, February 1, World Galgo Day, serves as a global call to action. This date marks the end of the hunting season in Spain, a time when countless Galgos face cruelty beyond comprehension. These sensitive and noble dogs spend their days confined in dark sheds, subjected to barbaric training methods like being towed behind vehicles at high speeds.
When the season ends, many are abandoned or killed in horrific ways, including the infamous “piano playing”: the Galgo is hung from a tree so it can barely touch the ground, struggling on its hind legs until it eventually suffocates. Others are simply dumped after being crippled so they cannot return to their hunters. In overcrowded shelters, abandoned Galgos often languish without hope.
Yet there is a brighter side: dedicated rescue organizations in Spain work tirelessly to save, rehabilitate, and rehome these gentle souls. Galgos make affectionate, grateful companions, despite the cruelty they’ve endured.
On Dia Del Galgo, let’s shine a light on these beautiful dogs. Together, we can honor those who never felt a kind hand and give new life to those still waiting for a better tomorrow.
