Q: When should my child have their first eye exam?

A: Children should be taken for regular NHS funded eye tests from age 3–4 years every 1-2 years, unless advised otherwise by your optometrist. If parents or carers have any concerns about their child’s eyes before this age, do not delay. Contact your local opticians or speak to your health visitor.

An eye test is a vital health check for your eyes. Every adult needs an eye test every two years, and some people may be advised to have a test more often.

During the eye test the optometrist checks if you need glasses, but they do much more than that too. When you have your eyes examined, the optometrist checks for eye diseases like glaucoma that you might not be aware that you are developing. They can also see signs of conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes when they check the eye.

If you have concerns about your sight, or simply haven’t had an eye test in the last two years, visit your local optician. An eye test can help you drive more safely, protecting both yourself and others.

Why do I need to protect my eyes when I’m playing sports outdoors?

When you are outside you are exposed to UV (Ultraviolet) rays from sunlight. There are three types: UVA, UVB and UVC. UVC is absorbed by the ozone layer and does not reach the earth, but the other types of UV light are linked to possible cataract formation, skin cancer and/or retinal damage with long term exposure. A good pair of protective eyewear can cut those risks so you can enjoy the sports you love without worrying about your eyes.
