🦉Pulling Out Owl the Stops🦉

This afternoon residents, staff and guests were enchanted by a visit from Owl Adventures. During the visit, the Owls flew, were held, stroked, and even snacked on some tasty (for Owls!) treats, much to the delight of everyone! With Monday having been Owl Awareness Day, we spent our whole day learning about owls in preparation for meeting g our new feathered friends.

After flight demonstrations(where the residents were in the receiving end of the flight), a lot of holding and stroking, and lots of owl education in the Main Lounge, Diego the friendly little owl then made room visits and visited Memory Lane, so that everyone could join in on the fun and awe of holding such majestic creatures.
It was truly one for the memory books, and everyone will be receiving photos of themselves with the Owls so that they will always remember today and the joy that it brought them.

On Tuesday, 12th August, at 2.30pm we will join renowned vocal coach Dan Cooper from Biiah for an exciting virtual singing session like no other.

No experience is necessary – this fun, easy and feel-good session is for everyone and will leave you smiling ear to ear. We hope you can join us!

The event will be available to watch via YouTube live, please contact us for more information.

A walk down memory lane

This afternoon we enjoyed reminiscing with a memory box from Boots UK . From photos and scented oils, to replicas of products that the residents have used over the years, it was a real conversation starter. We had great fun looking through the box and giving some of the objects a try. Wilma was particularly taken with the chemist related items as she worked at a chemist for over 30 years! We chatted, reminisced, shared stories, and ended off with a cuppa and cake. What a wonderful item from a business that they all recognise. We will definitely be using the box for 1:1 reminiscence in the coming days!

A Meaningful Trip Down Memory Lane

This afternoon's gentlemen's mini bus trip to Halkirk Heritage & Vintage Motor Society was made extra special as one of our residents, Peter, worked on the premises for decades, along with his twin sister. In fact one of the lovely staff said, "Peter WAS Stephens Plastic."

As we toured the museum, taking in everything from the gorgeous vintage cars to the old toys, farm equipment and various bits and pieces from years gone by, the gentlemen all really enjoyed the experience. Ian even knew many of the vintage car models and reminisced about his time as a mechanic.

We ended the tour with the room dedicated to Stephens Plastics. Here, Peter was everywhere! From an old video from the 60s showing what the factory did to photos of him working side-by-side with his sister, he enjoyed the trip down memory lane. It was so special to watch him return home, completely in his element surrounded by his own history. This is what it's all about...person-centred and meaningful. Looking at the exhibit through his eyes, we all enjoyed it just that bit more!

💐"Flowers are like friends. They bring colour to your world." 💐

Thank you once again to our friends at the Thurso COOP for the donation of beautiful flowers. This afternoon, the ladies made beautiful arrangements from them to brighten up the place. The massive sun flowers were a big hit, especially! We had fun arranging the beautiful blooms, chatting, and singing along to the music on the tv.

"Animals are such agreeable friends—they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms," - George Eliot

With the weather looking promising today, we headed to Lybster to visit the Caithness Animal Farm park. Along the way we enjoyed the lovely scenery and blue skies, with Piper pointing out familiar sites and old haunts.

Upon arriving we were greeted by a very friendly orange cat and two very vocal "lambies." With the kind help of the always-friendly staff, we took to visiting with all of the animals and feeding those that liked carrots and leafy greens. In fact, Nancy went through multiple cups of carrots just with the alpacas. She definitely made friends there! 😉

From alpacas and goats, to reindeer and a bearded dragon, we enjoyed time with all of the friendly animals, which brought smiles to everyone's faces.

On the way home we enjoyed our packed lunches and bottles of cold fizzy. It was just the thing after an afternoon in the sun!

Residents and patients across the country had a delightful time following the annual Wimbledon tennis tournaments.

Many homes and hospitals were decorated with themed flags and banners, as residents and patients engaged in a range of enjoyable activities, including mini tennis championships, quizzes and interactive sessions.

The big tennis enthusiasts were thrilled to watch the famous matches virtually from the comfort of their armchairs and to join the afternoon tea parties with strawberries and cream, Pimm’s and champagne.

Everyone had a fantastic time!

🐝🍯 What a Buzz! 🐝🍯

As part of our Live Virtual Events programme, residents and patients across the country enjoyed a fascinating virtual talk yesterday, led by expert beekeeper Julia Young, on The Wonderful World of Bees.

Everyone was absolutely captivated by her stories – from the intricate waggle dance to the royal drama of bee regicide. Who knew the life of a honeybee could be so exciting?

It was a great opportunity to learn more about nature, hives and the extraordinary teamwork of bees.

To make things even more exciting, the talented chefs at our homes prepared delicious themed treats and refreshments - including honey sandwiches, honey flapjacks and tea sweetened with local honey.

Thank you, Julia! 👏
