My lovely client came to see me all the way from Southampton based on a recommendation from one of her friends. She had been struggling with pain in her foot since last May caused by intense salsa training, she was struggling to walk and dance.
One acupuncture session later: pain dropped from 10/10 to 3, and the sharp pain became just a mild background discomfort.

The HO-1 Enzyme Miracle and the healing technique of Gua Sha 🪨🩸

It looks like terrible bruising but it's actually a biological hack!
Gua sha is one of my favourite tools for releasing deep tension and restoring mobility. The marks it leaves can look dramatic, but they’re not bruises—they’re a natural response from the body as circulation increases and stagnant tissue begins to clear.

What most people think of as a bruise comes from a strong impact that crushes tissue and causes deeper bleeding under the skin. Gua sha works very differently. When a smooth tool is moved repeatedly over well‑oiled skin, it creates controlled friction that encourages sluggish, deoxygenated blood from the deeper layers to rise toward the surface.

This results in tiny red or purple spots called petechiae—known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as sha. These marks aren’t caused by tissue damage. They’re a sign that stagnant metabolic waste is being brought up and cleared, rather than being trapped in the deeper layers of muscle and fascia.

When the light red or purple “sha” appears, your body boosts an enzyme called HO‑1, which plays a major role in calming inflammation and supporting tissue repair. This is why so many people feel a deep, lasting release after treatment—far beyond what gentle massage alone can reach.

Alongside the biochemical effects, gua sha helps loosen fascial adhesions, improve movement, and ease long‑held tightness from stress, posture, or repetitive strain.
