Yesterday I had the pleasure of teaching 7 ladies beginners basketry at the Ramsey Heights Nature Reserve in a beautiful outdoor venue surrounded by birdsong and blossoming trees.
If you'd like me to come and teach at your venue on a weekday, and you're within an hour's drive of me, then feel free to get in touch.

Lovely little job at my Father-in-law's place, using semi green willow, fresh enough to weave, dry enough not to take root in the soil πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ
Taking advantage of the sweet spot after the willow has been harvested, before it becomes fully dry and brittle.

Slightly obsessed with making these trays and traditional Irish skibs at the moment.
I'm leading a workshop here at on June 6th if you'd like to learn how to make one.
This workshop is appropriate for intermediate weavers and improvers, or very confident and capable beginners. Willow weaving requires good hand strength and dexterity.

Living Willow Archway: Pruning and Training.
This archway is two years old. It adds structure in the garden, acts as a wind break for my polytunnels, and provides a harvest of willow 🌱🌱🌱

I Can't Afford To Fill It, πŸ˜‚ but at least it's hidden from any would-be thieves!
The oil tank is nearly empty and our central heating has been off for a month, but the willow must be woven!
I will add a gate on this oil tank screen when time allows.
(The irony of hiding something behind willow screening, just to post it on the internet, is not lost on me πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚).

Here it is guys! The ENTIRE fence, before and after. From start to finish, this project (including doubling the size of our driveway) took 6 weeks.
A huge thank you to Nimmo Industrial Buildings for supplying the steel. I also want to thank .dibble.basketmaker and for being so forthcoming with information and answering all my questionsπŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

FINISHED! The BIGGEST fence I've ever made! 2 weeks of weaving around 30,000 sticks!

A little peek at the project I've been working on for the past few weeks. 40 meters of continuous woven fencing made from homegrown willow, using larch uprights that were grown in Holkham 🌱🌱🌱

25m of continuous woven willow fencing defining the margin between my market garden and the food forest border.

FINALLY! After months of harvesting willow out in the field, it's time to start bringing it in to store.
This is all of the basketry willow that I've grown this year, and it pretty much fills the shed. I was hoping to build a large barn for it all this winter, but time and money have put that plan on pause. I'm definitely going to need more space next year though as the harvest increases.
Sooo satisfying to have this all brought in and stored away, ready to use in my basketry and workshops later in the year πŸ™Œ Pretty sure I've got a years worth here 😁

Continuous Woven Fencing is something I've been practicing annually with my willow harvest for almost 10 years.
Slow going, only being able to work with the quantity of material that I've grown each season, a year between each attempt.
This was a fence that I made last February, and I consider it my final practice. Next month I begin my largest project to date. A 40m long by 2m high stretch sounding the entrance to my house. The willow is harvested, the steel is cut. The anticipation is real πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

It's almost been a year since I made these gates. Probably one of the most challenging woodworking projects I've taken on.
I really enjoyed the process of learning as I worked. I've been asked many times to make more, but due to my lack of experience, woodwork like this takes me a lot longer than I'd be willing to charge a customer for.
I will come back to this type of carpentry and make more in the future, but for now, many other tasks require my attention.
