FINALLY! After months of harvesting willow out in the field, it's time to start bringing it in to store.
This is all of the basketry willow that I've grown this year, and it pretty much fills the shed. I was hoping to build a large barn for it all this winter, but time and money have put that plan on pause. I'm definitely going to need more space next year though as the harvest increases.
Sooo satisfying to have this all brought in and stored away, ready to use in my basketry and workshops later in the year 🙌 Pretty sure I've got a years worth here 😁

Continuous Woven Fencing is something I've been practicing annually with my willow harvest for almost 10 years.
Slow going, only being able to work with the quantity of material that I've grown each season, a year between each attempt.
This was a fence that I made last February, and I consider it my final practice. Next month I begin my largest project to date. A 40m long by 2m high stretch sounding the entrance to my house. The willow is harvested, the steel is cut. The anticipation is real 🙌🙌🙌

It's almost been a year since I made these gates. Probably one of the most challenging woodworking projects I've taken on.
I really enjoyed the process of learning as I worked. I've been asked many times to make more, but due to my lack of experience, woodwork like this takes me a lot longer than I'd be willing to charge a customer for.
I will come back to this type of carpentry and make more in the future, but for now, many other tasks require my attention.

Trialing another of Dave's fantastic hand tools again this week. The "?" Hook. This time on the Brittany Blue willow, before grading it at the grading station.
This is a 2 year old bed, everything was cut back last year. It wasn't the best of growing conditions throughout 2025, but the harvest is still pretty impressive. It should be even better this year as willow stools reach their peak in year 3🙏

The Pairing Weave is most commonly used in the preparation of basketry bases. It involves working with two weavers: taking the left hand weaver behind a spoke, and then back out to the front and alternating this motion between the two weavers.
TIP: It really helps to pull down firmly with each motion, both front and back, to keep the pattern tight and uniform.

Harvesting Willow with a Raspberry Cutter.
A few weeks ago I saw a post by where he was using a raspberry cutter to harvest his willow, I immediately thought to myself, "I gotta get me one of those".
I struggled to find a decent one online, but then another week or so past and I saw a post by where he was making a small batch of these fantastic tools! I was fortunate enough to get my hands on one.
This is my first use, and it's fantastic! Like with most tools, it has it's limitations, but sticking to what it was designed for, it works superbly, and I'll be getting many hours of use out of it 🙌🙌🙌

Do you know which one of these willow cultivar names is made up? 😂
Big thanks for for making me these awesome signs for my basketry willows 🙏🙏🙏 A job I had been meaning to do for the past few years but just never found the time.
Excited to show them off at my Willow Propagation, Harvesting, Grading, and Storing workshop next weekend. Still a few spaces left if you'd like to book on, send me an email at lawsonsmarketgarden@hotmail.com
