The Harvest Continues: 11,000+ Stools to coppice before Spring.
I'm prioritising the harvest of the hybrid willows as I'll be weaving with these whilst they're semi-green at the end of March to build a fence at the entrance of my property. The sooner they're cut, the sooner I can use them.
I'm roughly halfway through harvesting my 1/2 an acre willow patch, slowly but surely working away at this epic seasonal task.
Feb 15th I'm running an in-person Willow Propagation, Harvesting, Grading, and Storing workshop here at HQ. Details can be found on my Facebook EVENTS page.
Loving my Hoggs Of Fife waterproof smock and wellies 🙌🙌🙌

My best seller at market.
Who doesn't love birds? These fat ball holders were one of the very first things I learnt to make from willow. To this day, they continue to be very popular online and at markets, better yet, I love making them :)
I've seen bluet**s, robins, woodpeckers, finches, long tailed t**s, and so many more bird species enjoying them here at
Merry Christmas everyone, and I hope you all have a happy new year 🙏🙏🙏

First Ever Drone Footage of the Willow Coppice.
On Monday Patrick of came over with his DJI mini 3 pro drone and captured these beautiful shots of the coppice during the golden hour sunset.
It's been a long time coming for me to see the work I've done from this perspective. 11,000 cuttings of 30+ varieties in 1/2 an acre.
I've since invested in a drone myself to capture more shots like this for future content, watch this space 🙏
Massive shout out and thanks to Patrick again! Much appreciated man!

Playing with a new design for a laundry basket. Featuring fitched sides to allow lots of air flow so those smelly socks and wet towels don't get all manky.
I need to work on my handle cranking, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Buzzing for the Makers Market this Sunday in Downham Market!!!

I feel like I need someone to either talk me out of buying a drone, or convince me it will be absolutely worth it... 🤣
Since day 1 of starting the market garden, I've always wanted to document the progress from the sky... Seeing the light amongst the willows this morning makes me want to capture it from a birds eye view even more so...
It's time to harvest this abundant resource, to grade and store it for future projects...

320 down, 10,680 to go.... Harvesting and grading willow in the field.
Once a willow cutting is planted and becomes established, it's often referred to as a stool, especially when coppiced. Coppicing involves cutting back all of the annual growth to harvest the rods or withies.
This practice is best carried out when all of the leaves have fallen. This Blitzenis and Pheasant Brown are first to drop their leaves this year so I've begun harvesting and grading them... Now to find (or build) somewhere to store them....
Massive shout out to for hooking me up with some amazing waterproofs this winter 🙏🙏🙏

In this video I demonstrate how to make a bare willow wreath. Perfect for seasonal celebrations, and ideal for adding foraged foliage. I also talk about how ...

Removing willow from the soaking tank and weaving dragonflies.
Once willow is harvested, it needs to be fully dried to allow all of the shrinkage to occur. This can take several months. Once dried, it can be soaked in water to make it malleable again. Soaking times can vary greatly depending on the size and variety of willow, as well as water temperature.
Once soaked, willow requires a "mellowing" period to allow all of the moisture to fully pe*****te the wood. This involves wrapping the willow in a blanket for around 24hrs before weaving.
