Meet the handsome Bob, a superstar in his own rights at North Devon Pony Glamping.

If you haven't heard of them, do take a look as its a beautiful spot.
As you can see this chap welcomed my visit following removing this bean, among alot of other build up.

He will feel so much more comfortable and relieved, to be rid of this bean.

Please keep your eyes peeled for flies!
I've seen alot of sore and swollen sheaths recently, mainly due to the return of flies with the wet and warm weather.
Flies love spots on horses with not much fur, such as;

1. Inside of ears
2. Sheaths
3. Umbilical regions.

Mainly as they can get a good bite and blood meals, these places are often ones that the horses can't get the flies away from very easily.

Flies can also be attracted to dirty and smelly sheaths, so now is a prime time to get booking in for their clean.

Behind the scenes:
So you see me at the clean but what happens after!

I have to fully stock my box with sponges, and syringes. Each horse has a new syringe, and sponge 🧽.

Each bucket πŸͺ£ is scrubed with a de greasing agent, rinsed, Virkon disinfectant applied, then rinsed and dried. Virkon is a DEFRA approved product, widely used in professional animal establishments.

Each bottle of agent also goes through the same process, and is filled with new
Each bottle is re labelled with its number and placed in its own bucket. This allows me to keep all used items separate, and visually πŸ‘€ there is no chance to using them.

They also go in to a separate pile in my boot, keeping all clean equipment pristine.

All used syringes are placed in recycling, waste emptied. And waste bucket cleaned, with a new lined placed in.
My silver bowls also go through the same cleaning process as the buckets.

So there is alot of nitty gritty and time that goes in to high biosecurity measures, to ensure your horses are in great hands with the gold standard clean equipment and materials.

Pole work. When to stop βœ‹ πŸ›‘

Pole work can be a great way to improve your horses joint movement, limb awareness and strength but….

If you do too much it can be detrimental 😒

One simple way you can tell that your horse is tiring is if they start knocking the poles.

If they are knocking them a lot right away then it is likely that the poles are too high or the exercise too difficult for them at this stage.

If they are managing them fine for a while and THEN you notice the knocking becomes more frequent, they are becoming fatigued and it’s time to stop for a rest βœ‹

Walk your horse for a few minutes and try again. If the knocking has become much less then carry on with the exercise until it starts again. Then stop βœ‹

If after a few minutes of walking you return to the exercise and your horse is knocking the poles right away then that’s enough. Stop the session for today πŸ›‘

Poles are a great tool but it is essential that you watch your horse very closely for signs of fatigue πŸ₯±

It's always so rewarding to receive a beautiful video, about how good sheath clean adds some spice and joy!

This is the very very handsome Sylvester who is a 18hh ID. As you can see he is feeling great after his visit from me this morning.
Greys can be more susceptible to lumps and bumps, so it even more import to get them booked in.

This chap however was in good health, and is feeling much better after being fairly dirty in his sheath.

Sheath cleaning is more than a clean!!
When performing all cleans, I am examining the surfaces and areas of the internal sheath cavity.
This is so if I feel anything abnormal I can let you know.

***** PLEASE NOTE I DO NOT DIAGNOSE, THIS NEEDS TO BE CARRIED OUT BY YOUR VETERINARY SURGEON******

Even as a REGISTERED VETERINARY NURSE, diagnosis is not in my legal capabilities.

Unless on the sheath itself, which can often make a visible appearance you are likely to be unaware of any abnormalities.
The cavity is actually very big with a lot of surface area, often people are suprise how far in my arm goes!

This out of sight area means things aren't often seen or detected until they cause an issue, or when a veterinary surgeon is called to examine the animal.

Although I am not there to tell you what a lump is or what to do, I can make you aware.
I can sometimes as in the above pictures depending on location, show you.
Or if I feel something I can tell you a size, and upon the next clean can inform you if there are any changes.

It's it up to you the owner to decided to ask you veterinary surgeon to examine and investigate, and be guided by them. Or you can monitor.

But it's peace of mind for you, when I clean that I will be feeling the area well.

Book your horse in today for a sheath clean, bookings being taken.
