🧠 Hearing Loss and Dementia, Let's discuss....

This is one of the most common subjects/questions I get asked. Does hearing loss increase the risk of dementia?

The short answer is.. No — hearing loss does not directly cause dementia.
But it does increase the risk, and the relationship is strong enough that major research groups consider hearing loss one of the most important modifiable dementia risk factors.

It's a bit like in summer the sales of ice cream and sunglasses goes up. There is an association between the sunshine and needing sunglasses or wanting an ice cream.

Ageing has a strong association with hearing loss and dementia but one doesn't cause the other.

Can treating hearing loss reduce the risk of dementia?
Yes — treating hearing loss may reduce dementia risk, especially when hearing aids are used early and consistently.

Untreated hearing loss can lead to social withdrawal
When hearing becomes difficult, people often avoid conversations or noisy environments.
This can lead to:

loneliness

reduced social engagement

depression

All of these are independent risk factors for dementia.

A hearing assessment is the first step to preventing this spiral.

Early detection gives you more options
If hearing loss is identified early:

treatment is more effective

the brain adapts more easily to hearing aids

you can protect communication, confidence, and independence

you can address other risk factors at the same time.
