Happy πŸ’š

For children who are neurodivergent or have a disability, a sibling can be so much more than family. They're often the first to offer unconditional acceptance β€” no explanations needed, no masks required.

Research tells us that siblings of children with disabilities often develop remarkable empathy and advocacy skills. And for the child with a disability? Having a sibling who truly *gets* them can reduce anxiety, build confidence, and make the world feel a lot less overwhelming.

Today, we celebrate those bonds β€” and the families who nurture them.

Navigating the EHCP process can feel overwhelming β€” the terminology, the forms, the meetings, the waiting. You shouldn't have to navigate it all alone.

Our EHCP advisor, Sara, supports families every step of the way β€” from understanding the paperwork, helping prepare for annual reviews, to knowing what to ask for in a plan.

Whether you're just starting out or you've hit a wall, Sara is here to help you feel informed, confident, and heard.

Can we talk about something rarely mentioned during school holidays?

For many neurodivergent children β€” whether autistic, ADHD, sensory sensitive, or those with a PDA profile β€” the end of term isn't a relief. It's a loss of the predictable structure that keeps them regulated.

That doesn't mean they need a strict timetable at home, but it does mean that making it up as you go, often isn't the best option for these children.

Small tips to help:
β€” Tell them the day's plan the night before.
β€” Keeping mealtimes consistent, even if everything else shifts.
β€” Build in decompression time after anything social.
β€” Let them choose one activity per day or a 'special' outing so they have some control.

Be gentle on yourself too, it's not always easy.

What's one thing that makes the school holidays easier for your family?

Affirming Language ⭐
Language is never neutral. For autistic individuals and the broader neurodivergent community, the words others use can either affirm their identity or reinforce the idea that there is something wrong with how their minds work.
Neuroaffirming language isn't about perfection. It's about choosing words that reflect respect, accuracy, and the understanding that neurological difference is not a deficit.

Swipe to learn which terms to rethink and what to say instead. ➑️

A few places to start:
β†’ "Autistic person" over "person with autism" (for most β€” always ask)
β†’ "High support needs" over "high/low functioning"
β†’ "Sensory overload" over "meltdown" used dismissively
β†’ "Thinks differently" over "lacks" anything

Save this for reference. Share it with someone who needs it.

Most people imagine the autism spectrum as a straight line from "a little autistic" to "very autistic." But that's not how it works.
The spectrum is more like a colour wheel 🎨
Every autistic person has their own unique profile β€” with different combinations of strengths, challenges, sensory experiences, communication styles and support needs.

βœ… The spectrum is a unique profile across many different areas β€”
β†’ Social communication
β†’ Sensory processing
β†’ Executive function
β†’ Emotional regulation
β†’ Routines & flexibility
β†’ Motor skills

No two profiles are the same. That's why person-centred support matters. πŸ’™

Let's set the record straight.
Autism is not something that needs to be "fixed," and autistic people absolutely can feel empathy, form deep connections, and live full, meaningful lives.
The myths we carry about autism cause real harm. They shape how autistic people are treated, diagnosed, and heard.

This month, we're challenging the assumptions. πŸ‘‡
Share this with someone who needs to see it. πŸ”

🌟 April is Autism Acceptance Month
This month, we'll be sharing real information, debunking common myths, and most importantly - amplifying what autistic people are telling us about their own lives and experiences.
Awareness tells us autism exists. Acceptance asks us to truly listen. Action means changing how we show up.
We're proud to support autistic children and adults at Foundations β€” in ways that are affirming, respectful, and led by individual needs.
Follow along this month as we learn, share and do better β€” together. πŸ‘‡

Inclusion isn't about making someone fit into a space that wasn't designed for them. It's about designing spaces where everyone belongs from the start;
Quieter environments.
Clear communication.
Flexibility.
Sensory-friendly options.

These aren't special accommodations β€” they're just good design. Ask yourself; who might feel excluded from the spaces you create?

1 in 100 people in the UK are autistic. How much do you actually know about their experience?
Today marks the start of Autism Acceptance week - so, let's move beyond simply knowing autism exists, and start truly understanding what autistic people are telling us about their lives.

Autism isn't something that needs to be fixed. It's a different way of experiencing the world β€” one that comes with its own strengths, challenges, and perspectives. Let’s start learning more, doing better, and creating spaces where autistic people can thrive.

⏰ The clocks are changing this weekend β€” and for many neurodiverse children, even an hour's difference can feel really big. Changes to sleep and routine can affect mood, behaviour, focus and emotional regulation.
Here are some gentle ways to help πŸ‘‡

Before Sunday:
- Shift bedtime by 10–15 minutes each night in the days leading up β€” small steps feel safer than one big jump.
- Keep routines visible; use visual timetables or schedules so your child can see what's happening, even when the clock feels confusing.
- Use natural light; open curtains first thing in the morning to help reset their body clock naturally β€” light is a powerful cue.
- Protect wind-down time; keep the hour before bed calm, consistent and screen-free. Predictability is reassuring.

πŸ’¬ Name it out loud
"The clocks change on Sunday, so it might feel a bit different this week β€” that's normal." Simply naming it reduces anxiety.
❀️ Be patient with big feelings

The good news? Most children settle within 1–2 weeks. You've got this. πŸ’ͺ
If your child is really struggling with transitions or routine changes, extra help can build those coping strategies.
