Today marks 10 years since Thoresby Colliery - one of the UK’s last deep coal mines - closed its gates for the final time.

For us at MRS Training & Rescue, this anniversary is more than a date. With over 120 years of mining heritage, our roots run deep. Many of our team started their careers in coal mines like Thoresby, and the knowledge, resilience and camaraderie formed underground still underpin our work today.

While the coalface is now silent, the legacy of mining lives on - in our people, our training, and our unwavering commitment to safety and rescue.

Mansfield Centre Gives Back

We're proud to have raised £250 for the Sherwood Forest Foodbank by collecting the small charges made for air cylinder refills at MRS Training & Rescue in Mansfield.

Earlier this week our Operations Manager Sean and Assistant Manager Derek delivered the donation - and received this lovely message from Margaret, who manages the foodbank:

“On behalf of Sherwood Forest Foodbank I would like to say a huge thank you for the very generous donation of £250. This money will enable us to buy much needed food for local people in crisis - we all really appreciate your support.”

A Fond Farewell to John & Liz Mowbray 💙

On Friday, we celebrated the retirement of two very special people – John and Liz Mowbray – who have been part of the MRS Training & Rescue family for many years.

Liz joined us in 2001 and quickly became the heartbeat of the Mansfield centre. From receptionist to Office Manager and eventually a key member of the finance team, Liz has always given 100% – with her trademark humour, honesty and attention to detail.

John’s story with Mines Rescue goes back even further – starting in 1978 with the National Coal Board and joining full-time in 1983. Known for his passion, high standards and sense of humour, John has led teams, managed projects and played a vital role in shaping the future of our organisation.

After decades of working together, it feels only fitting that they now retire together too – with a big family holiday to Florida on the horizon!

Thank you, John and Liz – for your loyalty, hard work and everything you’ve done for us. We’ll miss you both – but wish you all the happiness in the world in this new chapter.
