Did you know that the health of your gut influences your mental health?
On here are some things we can all drop into our week to help keep us resilient in the weirdness that is 2020:
👉Anti-inflammatory diet. Inflammation is at the root of many gut issues and mental health conditions so include good sources of fat to help keep it is under control: oily fish, grass-fed meat, eggs, seeds, nuts, avocado, olives.
👉Bitter salad leaves help to stimulate digestive enzymes. Well-digested food is less irritating on your gut, and less likely to lead to bloating and wind. Include rocket, radishes, radicchio, endive, dandelion greens.
👉Fermented foods are a source of beneficial bacteria (probiotics) and help to maintain balance in your gut. Try sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha (see precious post for an easy recipe), miso, kefir, live yoghurt if you are ok with dairy.
👉Prebiotics are the fertiliser for probiotic bacteria, helping to keep them diverse and strong. Include onions, garlic, leeks, chicory root, asparagus.
👉Stress inhibits digestion so can be a key player in many people’s digestive problems. Anything that helps you to ‘unhook’ can be helpful. Yoga, breathing exercises, walking the dog, bare feet on grass, reading, talking, cooking....whatever your thing is. Do that. The key is to do it regularly.
☝️If you have digestive problems you should make any dietary changes gradually to help identify any problem foods.
