New volunteer led group at The Barn: Lonely Mums and Dads Club

Being a parent/caregiver can feel a little lonely sometimes - especially if your partner works away, you're
new to the area or it's your first child. Lonely mums and dads club is a relaxed, friendly and inclusive
group where everyone is in the same boat - navigating the ups and downs of parenthood. It's a safe,
supportive space to meet other parents, share experiences and build new friendships.

Breastfeeding peer support is also available for anyone who'd like it.

All babies and toddlers are welcome - we just ask parents to keep a close eye on their little explorers to
help keep our tiniest visitors safe.

Come as you are - tired, unsure, curious, or just in need of a chat.

Firework Safety - Tips for sparkler safety:

All information taken from the Child Accident Prevention Trust: https://bit.ly/47npQa6

- Sparklers burn at a very high temperature (as hot as 1600°C, 16 times the boiling point of water) so need treating with caution.

- Wear gloves when holding a sparkler, and keep it at arm’s length, as sparks can fly!

- Only hold one sparkler at a time.

- Don’t hold a baby or young child while you’re holding a sparkler – they can reach out unexpectedly and grab at it.

- The official advice is: Don’t give sparklers to children under 5. They’re too young to hold them safely and don’t understand why they might be dangerous.

- But it can be hard to say no, if it’s what all your family and friends do. Trust your judgement about what your child is capable of. You can use our guide to teach your little one some safety basics.

- Older children can be trusted with sparklers, but you’ll need to keep an eye on them.

- Teach children not to wave sparklers near anyone else or run around while holding them.

- Once sparklers are out, put them in a bucket of water as they can stay very hot.

How to keep children safe this Halloween:

1. Most Halloween costumes are not up to the same safety standard as other costumes so can ignite and burn faster, so keep children away from naked flames and other heat sources.

2. As cheap costumes may not meet UK safety standards, spending a bit more from a reputable store or website will be safer.

3. Costume labels with a UKCA or CE mark or saying 'This garment has undergone additional safety testing for flammability' have been tested for fire safety so it should burn slower if it were to catch fire.

4. If children wear clothes under their costume, it is an extra layer of protection to their skin if their costume catches fire.

5. By teaching your child to Stop, Drop and Roll, they will know what to do if their costume catches fire.

6. Keep candles out of the way of costumes and decorations, and do not put candles on a surface that may burn. Make sure to blow out your candles when you're done!

7. Switching to battery-powered candles will reduce fire risk, but make sure the battery compartment is secure.

8. Being visible is important all year round, but with the nights becoming darker, make sure your child is visible when walking around on Halloween, with the use of reflective tape, fluorescent glowsticks etc.

9. Make sure children are being safe by using face paint instead of masks (to increase what they can see), putting phones away, having an agreed route for children over 12 and a trusted adult with children under 12.

10. If your child isn't old enough to carve a pumpkin with a sharp knife, use no-carve ideas.

11. Avoid hard candy, lollipops and mini eggs as they are a choking hazard, and remember not to eat whilst walking or running.

12. Ensure button batteries are secured in their compartment with a screw or similar fastener.

Welcome to Torbay 0 to 19

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust are working with Action for Children and the Children’s Society as the new Torbay 0 to 19 Partnership. This new innovative service will be the first of its kind in the region and possibly the UK. The partnership brings together health visiting and school nursing, with children’s centres and Checkpoint so that families and young people in Torbay can access services from pregnancy through to adulthood, in one place.

Our Vision

To work alongside our communities in Torbay to provide an excellent service that supports and helps children, young people and their families/carers be safe, happy, and healthy and reach their full potential.

We want to involve as many people as possible in developing services towards this vision including children, young people and their families/carers, staff and stakeholders to make sure we work towards and achieve the vision.
