I thought that I would share this. As I know that I have had this conversation with quite a few Mummies-to-be over the last month or so.

Do you know that out of all of my three children, only one was born on their due date?! One was two days later and the other had to be induced at 41.1 due to medical reasons and I am sure she would've been happy to stay there for at least a week or so more, as she was super cosy.

In a world where we rush around and try to fit too much in, a baby’s ‘due date’ has come to be seen by some people as a kind of appointment.

Statistically, only 5% of babies are born on their due date and many healthy babies are born before or after this.

I sometimes suggest that people plan to do something nice on their baby’s due date; there’s a really high chance that you’ll be free to do it!

But the important thing to remember is that, on the whole, our bodies and our babies’ bodies know what they’re doing.

If you’d like more information about due dates, induction or birth in general, see https://www.sarawickham.com/iol

I know that I have had this conversation with my high risk ladies every week on my current term. We talk risks and how to ask the right questions to make an informed decision to allow you to have a birth that is right for you and your baby. Induction isn't always the answer and comes with it's own risks, as does C-section! It's all about weighing up the pro's, con's and risks of any induction!

Research, become informed and never be afraid to ask the health professionals questions and statistics to allow you to make an informed choice.

I understand that some people see elective, pre-labour caesarean as an alternative to induction.

No shade on your decisions. You do you.

I’m just pointing out that this is actually
another FORM of induction.

Induction is when we try and make birth happen sooner than would have happened naturally.

That’s exactly what elective caesarean does.

So, as with other forms of induction, it’s important to weigh up the pros and cons before you
decide what’s right for you.

I think there's a need to recognise that there are two elements to induction.

(1) the fact that we're trying to bring labour on earlier than the baby might have chosen

(Because yes, although we have more to learn about this, we're confident that it's babies who decide when labour starts.)

and (2) the means and methods by which we do that.

Many people find the idea of elective caesarean more palatable than the idea of the pharmaceutical and/or mechanical induction methods that are used in hospital inpatient induction.

I totally get that.

And if it's what you want, and you're fully informed about the potential risks downsides, then go for it.

But it is a form of induction, and I don't think women and families are always aware of this.

There's loads of information about induction on my website if you'd like to find out more.

So, I thought I would give you all my perspective on why I think that Charlotte is amazing for doing what she is doing and our why as to why we keep on fundraising.

As some of you may know; I am a perinatal educator and ex Nanny (with 15 years experience). In the Summer of 2020 I had a phone call off some mad woman who wanted to offer free, educational baby classes for those families that had been affected by COVID. I thought that this was an amazing idea, as it's just what the community needed! Families needed support and a smiley face, as well as fun and laughter. Mummy and Me was a totally different session to those of you that attend now. We were two meters apart and had separate toy baskets, but the "why" has always been the same: to help and support as many families as we can to be the listening ear and the support network that is accessible to everyone.

Back then I was able to come in alternate Friday's (to fit around work commitments). As the years have gone by we upped our sessions and I had and wanted to give up work to continue our vision, this meant that in order to do so I have to bring in a wage. This is where a huge chunk of where Mummy and Me money goes (even though I earn less than minimum wage, so that we can keep on running), Lena herself doesn't take a wage and drives from Cornwall three times a week (I told you I was dealing with a mad woman)! Our vision is and always will be the same: to be able to offer free, educational sessions to the Community, to be the smile and support that is there for every single one of you should you need it. To offer the much needed hug and shoulder to cry on whether you are suffering with PND, life is throwing constant dodgeballs your way or you just need to vent! Equally, we want to offer fun sessions to everyone to give you special time with your little one and the opportunity to make friends.

Now why I think that Charlotte is amazing: Charlotte came to us heavily pregnant, unsure of where to turn and how she was going to keep her head above water mentally with 3 children. She herself has had a poorly baby to deal with and has the strength and determination to bake cakes and biscuits and run a stall for us at our fundraising event and she equally wanted to do something that would help our sessions remain in Torbay (as we're not Government funded, so we are reliant on grants and donations to keep our sessions running).

You Mummies like Charlotte are our why! Even with crippling anxiety you know that we are your safe space, your place to thrive, vent and get support, you are the reason that Lena spends huge amounts of time on the road and filling out forms for grants, you are the reason why Mummy and Me has evolved and is running 5 days a week.

This October marks 5 years of Mummy and Me and 5 years of us loving what we do regardless of any struggles that we have had to face. We thank each and every one of you for being part of Mummy and Me and thank you Charlotte for your determination to bring some money in, we really appreciate it. 😘😘 Xx
