THE DILATION STATION 🚽

🌍In the birth world we call this porcelain throne the “dilation station” and here’s why!!!

✨you relax your pelvic floor muscles and bottom which allows the muscles of the uterus to contract more effectively

✨your body is working with gravity

✨you are opening up your pelvis to allow baby to descend down into the birth canal

✨your body naturally wants to wee and poo, which also works for birthing baby!

✨the toilet is a private, comfortable space where the “shy” hormone oxytocin will be produced which brings on the contractions

I spent most of my labour with my first baby on the toilet, I thought it was just a bad tummy as I had a good clear out! Definitely in denial that I was in fact in labour, until my lovely hubby told me to get off the loo as baby’s head was beginning to crown 😂🚽

Where did you feel comfortable in labour? Tell us in the comments below!

Scientists have discovered an odorless scent molecule called hexadecanal, or HEX, that is released by humans and impacts aggressive behavior. The HEX molecule is the most abundant molecule released on the newborn baby's head. The researchers found that this molecule reduced aggression in males (biologically important as infanticide is a relatively common event in the mammalian world) and increased aggression in females (key to infant protection). We have shared with parents that when they are skin to skin with their newborn they should remove the baby's hat to allow them to inhale the scent of their newborn as it elicits an entire range of activity in the parental brain. This is one more reason to take a deep sniff! (Mishor et al., 2022)

Let’s talk about your breathing... This really simple breathing technique can boost your oxytocin levels, calm you AND help baby on their way. A long, slow, deep breath in through your nose and a long, slow breath out through your mouth. As you breathe, concentrate your mind and think to yourself ‘inhale peace, exhale fear’... repeat as necessary throughout your surges, and you will feel your body soften and relax, and your mind will calm too. So simple, so logical, and so effective. DM for more information, or to book your bespoke hypnobirthing course with me ✌️❤️

Reading this article reduced me to tears. And the only difference between me and these women is the colour of our skin. BAME women deserve better.

After a 2018 report found inequalities in maternal deaths, i spoke to BAME women about their birth experiences

This is so true, and this why the fourth trimester must be acknowledged and respected. Babies spend a long time feeling completely safe, secure and warm within their Mother’s protection and then all of a sudden they are in the cold, bright world. Why wouldn’t they want to be held? ❤️

This is so very true! 🤣🤣🤣 ladies, when in labour, keep upright and moving as much as you can. Gravity is so important in helping your baby make their way into the world!

Let’s talk about OXYTOCIN! Your number 1 birth partner. Fondly known as the love hormone; Oxytocin is the magic ingredient to make sure you have the best possible birth for you. Oxytocin is the hormone that makes the muscles of the uterus work in labour, and so, if you are relaxed, calm and happy in a safe environment, you will naturally produce Oxytocin for an efficient and comfortable labour. Oxytocin can be increased in numerous, and very simple ways...

Absolutely adore this new campaign from Mothercare UK ❤️

And wanted to share this poem again about that Postnatal haze full of learning and comparison and no sleep and love and tears ❤️

SHE by Megan Rossiter, Positively Birthing.

————————————————————

She had a water birth at home in her bedroom,

You had a emergency cesarean section.

She didn’t ‘do it’ better than you, she did ‘it’ too.

She got her epidural and things went smoothly.

You had forceps and an episiotomy.

She didn’t ‘do it’ better than you, she did ‘it’ too.

She went into labour at 39 weeks,

You were induced at 42+6.

She didn’t ‘do it’ better than you, she did ‘it’ too.

She had a quick birth, just a few hours

You had a marathon, 3 long days of surges

She didn’t ‘do it’ better than you, she did ‘it’ too.

Her baby took to breastfeeding and they fed for a year,

You expressed for a bit, then used formula.

She didn’t ‘do it’ better than you, she did ‘it’ too.

Hers was sleeping, 8 weeks in, through the night

Yours was co-sleeping at 2, which you liked.

She didn’t ‘do it’ better than you, she did ‘it’ too.

She reads a poem about her and about you,

You think she’s ‘she’

She thinks you’re ‘she’ too.

Let her do her,

and you do you.

UPRIGHT positions during labour and birth helps the both the mother and the baby. Although there is strong evidence to back this up, it’s actually not hard to understand - space and gravity are the clues 🤔
—————————————-
Sometimes women want to lie down, and women should be supported to do whatever they feel most comfortable.
————————————
But if the bed 🛏 continues to be the central focus of the room, and women feel that this is what is expected of them (and we are socialised to believing this too) - then they may not know the benefits of being upright and mobile, or that it is an option 😞

What do you see in practice? What do you do when caring for women in labour?
