๐–๐ก๐ฒ ๐ฏ๐จ๐ญ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฆ๐ž?
Iโ€™ve lived here for over 20 years, raised my family here, consistently supported local charities, and remain deeply committed to our community, the viability of local businesses and the well-being of residents.
I have spent the last five years as your councillor working hard for this community and delivering results, and I am standing again to retain a strong, independent voice for Totland and Colwell that answers to residents and addresses their needs.
As your local councillor, I have worked tirelessly to support local people and protect local services. I have fought successfully to maintain our NHS dentists, our village Bakery and Hursts. I have challenged sewage discharges into our precious streams, rivers and beaches.
At Isle of Wight Council I have strenuously defended green-field sites at Brambles, The Pound, Heathfield and Camp Road from inappropriate development, protected key services such as the Afton tip and footpaths, and retained our free on-street parking.
For all of the past 5 years I have fought for the delivery of homes that meet our local need rather than feeding the second homes market.

๐ˆ ๐›๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ž๐ฏ๐ž:
A councillor should be visible, accountable, and prepared to act. That is how I have approached this role, and I will continue being accessible with my weekly ward surgeries and engagement with residentsโ€™ groups.
Being independent matters. Local decisions should be made for local people, not driven by national party politics. At County Hall, I have worked across political divides to challenge poor decisions, pushed for greater openness and to deliver transparency, protected public assets, and supported better outcomes for Island residents as a whole.

To stand up for Totland and Colwell,
Protect local services and green spaces,
Support residents and businesses,
Fight for fairness and accountability,
and make sure our community has a councillor who works hard and speaks plainly.

Yesterday I attended the hearings of the Planning Inspectors in the main chamber at County Hall. It was a key, perhaps final session to review open issues on the draft IPS and to make representations to those inspectors.

I was the only Isle of Wight Councillor to attend to make representations.
Cllrs Vanessa Churchman and Cllr Peter Spink attended to observe having both provided me with their inputs. I had also received queries from other Councillors seeking for me to put forward points on their behalf although they declined to attend in person.

The key issues were:
-The Government model figure, supported by the Planning Inspectors, that the Isle of Wight should accept a requirement of 703 new homes per year for the next 5 years prior to reverting to a requirement of 1,104 per year thereafter.
-Deliverability and hence reasonableness of that figure.
-Allocating Isle of Wight land, predominantly greenfield sites, upon which to deliver those new homes.

I have challenged each of the above throughout this process over several years and this opportunity echoed my earlier representations:

A. I called for:
-Homes that meet the local need at social rent levels i.e. ยฃ500 - ยฃ700 per month.
-Homes that are affordable at 5 times the average island salary of around ยฃ21,000 i.e. to buy at around ยฃ105,000 - ยฃ120,000.
-High quality modular relocatable homes that can be rapidly deployed to take those in expensive temporary accommodation.

B. I advise that:
-We have between 2,000 and 3,000 properties for sale, but very few to rent.
-We have thousands of granted planning permissions that are โ€˜bankedโ€™ by developers and landowners, and not being delivered.

C. I reminded all of the national policy considerations that the plan ignores:
-To build up, and not out
-Conflicts with the voice of Islanders and Parish, Community and Town Councils.
-Conflicts with our net-zero policy which is seeks to revoke.
-Threatens our National and International designated status as a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

D. I reminded all of:
-The failure of the plan to provide evidence that each of the sites are deliverable within the timescales proposed.
-That the Mayor of the newly created Mayoral Combines County Authority of Hampshire and The Solent will have supremacy over regional planning strategy and that local plans will not be able to subvert that, and that Mayor will be empowered to unilaterally award Mayoral Development Orders circumventing the current planning controls.
-That, having previously noted the lack of supporting sewage and other infrastructure, the viability of delivering for-profit homes by commercial developers here is subject to substantial costs relating to smaller scale, availability of skilled labour, and 20% higher costs of goods compared to the mainland.

E. The session revealed:
-Commercial developer net profits are supported at 20%
-Infrastructure contributions (so called section 106 and health contributions) are included in the delivery costs and hence paid โ€˜above the lineโ€™ by purchasers rather than coming from the developer 20% profit margin.

I believe my points were clearly articulated, well evidenced and reflected the concerns of residents, many of whom believe this draft plan will only destroy our local greenfield sites whilst doing nothing to tackle the need to give local people homes.

In short a complete disaster from a Government that has set an arbitrary target of 1,500,000 that will only fuel the profits of commercial developers and which fails to deliver against the real local need.

I live in the hope of common sense prevailing, and we will receive the decision of the Planning Inspectors soon.

Now that I am in the loop for these monthly briefings regarding the state of health service provisioning on our Island, here is the latest Healthwatch intelligence report for Feb/March 2026

It demonstrates those areas were demand and expectations are being met and those areas where it is not. ๏ฟผ

Itโ€™s official:
On 7th May our Totland and Colwell residents will get to choose who will represent them for the next 3 years.
Who will work tirelessly to protect our beautiful countryside.
Who will ensure council owned lands are used to deliver social rent homes rather than sold to developers for commercial gain.
Who will go that โ€˜extra mileโ€™ to defend local businesses and preserve services.
And so much more that I have strived to achieve these past 5 yearsโ€ฆ.

The choice is simple - a member of one or another national political party required to follow their policies, or a local independent resident with a proven track record for delivering with integrity and transparency.

Iโ€™m seeking re-election, and for residents to once again put their trust in me to do my absolute best for us all.

Many thanks to all those in Totland and Colwell that have agreed to have my election posters in their garden. I have started to place them as we are only 4 weeks away from the elections on 7th May.

Please email, message or call me if you are willing to support me with an A4 sized poster or window display. As there was a significant difference of opinion as to the best photo to use, I have had a few of each printed locally to choose from!
(I'll keep my mum's favourite secret for now).

The work in Heathfield Road, Freshwater was originally scheduled for late last year but postponed because of poor weather as the materials used require dry and mild temperatures.

The work at Heathfield Road, Freshwater will be from the junction of Colwell Road to the High Street section that was completed last November.

The work is scheduled to begin on 20 April and last three days.

Heathfield Road will be closed during work between approximately 7.30am and 5pm and re-opened, if safe to do so, at all other times.

Today, in advance of the local elections on 7th May, I and fellow Isle of Wight Councillors enter the pre-election period previously known as โ€œpurdahโ€.
The rules which apply during this period are somewhat different to at other times but we remain Councillors, my ward surgeries on Thursday at Totland Parish Office continue, and I remain available to help residents as normal - including with electoral registrations, postal voting and proxy voting.
Other Isle of Wight Council functions also continue although there are some restrictions on decision making.
My heartfelt thanks for all the support over the past 5 years.

P.S. Photo taken by my lovely wife Barbara.
