Rumination. Oooof. For SEN parents there is even more stuff bobbling about - what educational environment might work, am I doing too much or too little, do I need to chase that paperwork or appointment - it can be a never ending hamster wheel.
What can help?
⏰ Ask yourself - Is this the right time to be thinking about this? If it’s 2am in the morning chances are it’s a no.
⏳How long have I been thinking about this? Invite yourself to take agency about how long you’re prepared to think about a particular difficulty, and schedule it in.
🕹️Is this in my control?
🛑 Am I avoiding anything by ruminating? For example, avoiding uncomfortable feelings.
Remember - rumination is a bit like a rocking chair - you’re going backwards and forwards without going anywhere. An anxious brain tricks us into thinking we’re doing something useful. But really it often takes us away from our goals and intentions.
These are the kinds of topics that some people like to explore in their counselling sessions, to help find new ways of being on their circumstances.
My website http://revibe-counselling.co.uk has more info about the kind of counselling I offer if you think it might be supportive for you.
