If you buy strawberries 🍓 get organic!

May is National Strawberry Month, and a great time to celebrate the sweetness and versatility of strawberries in their peak season, but did you know that strawberries consistently rank high on the EWG’s “Dirty Dozen” report for pesticide residues? In “The Metabolic Approach to Cancer,” Dr. Nasha Winters, ND, FABNO stresses the importance of eating organic foods — and growing your own whenever possible — to avoid exposure to carcinogenic pesticides and heavy metals. This is especially true with strawberries!

Discover more about the importance of choosing organic strawberries and how it can protect your health in our latest blog post at MTIH.org/strawberries. 🌱🍓

If you are one of the millions of people in the UK who suffer with constipation, I'm sure you can relate to this image.

This is what it feels like doesn't it, when you're constipated? You sit on the loo, for what seems like hours, and for many, it can be up to an hour, even longer, before a few rabbit droppings pop out. If you're straining, this is going to increase your risk of getting piles and prolapses.

All that time, and so little to show for it. Frustrating and worrying because you understand the importance of getting rid of your body's solid wastes to prevent contamination of your body. Not just that, chronic constipation is linked to an increased risk of bowel infections, including sepsis, bowel perforations, diverticulitis and bowel cancer. Other common symptoms include:

Stool often difficult to push out causing pain

Bleeding

A**l fissures

Haemorrhoids

Bloating

Stomach cramps

Embarrassing smelly wind

Interrupted sleep

Anxiety

Headaches

Skin problems

Weight gain

Feeling sick and dizzy

Increased risk of urinary tract infections

Painful sexual in*******se

Here's a few tips to avoid constipation:

Apple cider vinegar to increase digestion; start
your day with 1 tsp in a little warm water

Water - make sure you keep hydrated and flush
your system out by drinking plenty of filtered water

Drink herbal teas that contain herbs and spices
to help gently stimulate the bowel - liquorice root,
ginger root, fennel

Anti-inflammatory foods: Oily fish, walnuts, flax
seeds, chia seeds, turmeric, ginger

Extra vegetables: include green leafy vegetables
(kale, spinach, peas, green beans etc) in your
diet as they contain magnesium. A deficiency
in magnesium can slow down transit time in the
bowel. Guidelines state 5 portions of vegetables
and 2 portions of fruits daily, but try and aim for 7
portions of vegetables and 2 portions of fruit. Figs
and bananas are also high in magnesium

Fermented foods: Kimchi, kombucha, sauerkraut
and kefir as they contain beneficial bacteria (if
you tolerate them; some people react to these if
they have SIBO)

Lemon - add fresh lemon to your water to
stimulate the liver and bowels

Flax seeds - add milled flaxseed to your breakfast
- aim for 2 tbsp per day

Interesting.. do you crave oysters?

My teacher, Dr Carl Pfeiffer, was the first to put zinc on the map for mental health thanks to a girl called Lisa. Lisa was crazy but her parents had learnt how to keep her sane. Oysters. If Lisa had a couple of oysters a day her mind calmed down. Dr Carl Pfeiffer worked out it was zinc. Zinc, as you probably know, is essential for cellular growth and repair and thus found in all seeds, nuts, beans, lentils, as well as eggs, meat and fish, but nothing beats oysters.

The basic calculation for our zinc needs to support growth are 7.5mg a day. An oyster gives 5.5mg. But is that really the minimum? What’s the optimum? Few consider, or have explored what intake is needed for optimal mental or immune health.

Zinc is vital for immunity. Zinc is one of the most important minerals for your immune system, and one of the most commonly deficient ones. An illustration of this is its role in the thymus, a small gland that sits next to the thyroid gland behind the boney dip at the base of your throat. It’s where your T-cells go for training.

Keep feeding the good bugs..

For years gut health was the missing piece that no one wanted to talk about - despite the leading experts telling us otherwise. The reality can be confronting and definitely confusing, but mounting research in recent years has shown us what our ancestors knew all along; our gut health governs our ov...

When health and the environment synchronise.. it’s a win win 👍

On we look at dairy farming and its huge negative environmental impact:

1. 270 million cows are presently being bred for their milk, each emitting methane which is a climate altering gas. The 13 largest dairy firms in the world have been found to have the same combined greenhouse gas emissions as the whole of the United Kingdom.

2. Deforestation. Animals eat a lot more calories than are returned for their meat, milk and eggs. 83% of all available farmland is used for animal agriculture but that only gives us 18% of our calories.

3. River, lake and ocean pollution. Our waterways are dying because of algal blooms caused by phosphorus and nitrogen from animal waste and fertilisers. Anywhere there is significant dairy farming the waterways are dying.

The microbiome has become a buzzword in today’s consumer lexicon.

From women's health journals to bar soap, nearly every product and publication has begun to tout its connection with the microbiome. And rightfully so: it’s essential for human life, fueling our development, immunity, and nutrition.

Today, we understand the microbiome enables our production of energy, micronutrients, & regenerative pathways. It manufactures the neurotransmitters that support our short term memory, our mood stability, sleep quality, sexual function, stress hormones, dopamine, and more — all of which are produced at the gut lining.

As human beings, our neurologic capacity begins with our connection to the microbiome. At its most basic definition, micro means small, & biome signifies living creatures — essentially all of the living microbes on & inside the human body.

Interestingly, after decades of genomics research, it has become apparent that human cells are not at the center of human health, but rather it's the fungi and bacteria that are. It is estimated that we have 50 to 70 trillion human cells, which pale in comparison to the 1.4 quadrillion bacteria, 10 quadrillion fungi, & 14 quadrillion mitochondria inside our bodies. In fact, the number of genes in one person’s microbiome is 200X the number of genes in the entire human genome.

As we explore the microbiome and our human biology, it's clear this diverse non-human micro ecosystem is what makes life possible. Within every organ system throughout our whole body, it’s this unique niche of bacteria, fungi, & yeast that nurture our human cells.

Even long before we humans showed up, it was the microscopic creatures within the microbiome that developed life on Earth. Since then, this planet has shown itself to be passionate about one thing: biodiversity — with the microbiome continuously trying to diversify life, finding more and more adaptation at every opportunity.

In celebration of World Microbiome Day, let's get out in it today! Kick off the shoes, walk in a garden, on a forest path, a beach, a meadow, or mountain top. Extra credit for all of the above....
