What's the link between masculinity, physical activity and injury? That's been our theme this week @ Ageless Man, as we continue to explore what it means to be a man.
This week we were joined by the amazing Dr Tom Boyd of the giving us his expert experience on men, exercise, injury and recovery. It was an amazing discussion, and we could have been there all night. Some of the key themes:
πWe're made to move, and should be aiming for at least some minimal exercise everyday. Ignore the messages and pressures of the fitness industry and just get out and move!
πWe should all be aiming for a mixture of resistance and cardio each week. It not only makes us fitter, but can extend our lives!
πYou don't have to be a beefcake to be physically fit...just being active is enough; if you have a physical job, rest is just as important!
πSleep is SUPER important for recovery
πListen to your body...don't be a hero and try to overdo it!
Our research into cultural conceptions of manhood tell us that everywhere men are culturally expected to take risks and face danger. We take that into our exercise patterns, overdo it and get injured. Then we can't move and feel less of a man. this leads to poor mental health and further risky behaviour such as drink and drugs.
Amazingly nearly every man present had a story or how they USED to be more active when they were younger, then something happened and they stopped.
We're learning how important our connections to our physical selves are to our mental health as men.
