Talking to a Friend vs. Therapy 🤝💡

Friends and therapists are both essential for your mental well-being, but they serve very different purposes.

While a friend provides support and a way to bond, a therapist offers a non-judgmental, confidential, and professional space to help you find your own answers.

Both are a part of a strong support system!

Anxiety is part of the human condition. Despite, somewhat ironically, the alarm and anxiety that discussing it can provoke, we actually need some anxiety. However, when it begins to take over our lives, to shape our decisions and even become the prism through which we view life, it is something that needs our attention.

Understanding that anxiety is part of who we are allows us to give up the fight of needing to get rid of anxiety. It allows us to see anxiety as a “storm”, something that we can weather and ride out. This is how we change our relationship to anxiety, how we build resilience and reduce its impact upon us.

And this is perhaps a skill that is needed more than ever. According to the Mental Health Foundation, an average of 37.1% of women and 29.9% of men reported high levels of anxiety, and the uncertain times that we are living through are only adding to these pressures.

Mindfulness is an excellent way to help us befriend and change our relationship with our anxiety. It allows us to reframe how we experience it and develop the skills that help us reduce the impact anxiety has upon us.

If you would like to learn more about how mindfulness can help us with anxiety, then check out our Managing Anxiety: In life and in Meditation course. It starts on 9th September and runs for 5 Tuesday evenings.

You can hold your pain while offering yourself kindness. One doesn’t cancel out the other.

It's the start of Mental Health Awareness Week, and we're celebrating the power of blue spaces to support mental wellbeing. 🧠

Research has shown that the Ocean has the power to calm, restore, and uplift us, but it’s a two-way street. We must protect the Ocean's health so that we can thrive. That’s why we’re proud to be part of the global Ocean Health, Human Health movement.

Our Blue Mind Hub, based in Plymouth, is a wellbeing programme that supports people living with poor mental health. Using social prescribing, or 'blue prescribing' we help individuals connect with the Ocean by getting in, on, or around blue spaces to boost confidence, reduce stress, and support long-term mental wellbeing.

If you or someone you know in Plymouth could benefit from this programme, speak to your GP or local social prescribing service to get involved.
