For those who chose not to go on the annual residential in Cornwall last term, we had some fun a bit closer to home!

Throughout the week we enjoyed lots of activities, so here’s a little break down of the week:
The students enjoyed baking cakes and biscuits for consumption in our Community Café the next day. As a treat following the baking, we all headed into Paignton for a round of crazy golf. On his first swing, one student got a hole in one after the ball went through a tunnel and spinning into the hole. A brilliant shot. All students enjoyed their round of golf. ⛳️

On request, we headed to Torquay for 10 pin bowling and keen to get strikes. Each student got at least one strike, whilst others got two or three. Thereafter, we headed to a beach in Paignton for a Sound Bath. This was different to what the students are normally use to at college for their Sound Therapy. Through relaxation and breathing exercises, we all enjoyed the sea air and sounds. On the Paignton Green, we all sat in a circle, listening to the vibrating sounds of a Tibetan Singing Bowl and physically feeling it vibrations on our backs. This was an amazing afternoon and the students enjoyed the experience of relaxation and meditation.

SoundArt Radio were invited back into the college to do some experiments on the sounds and enabled the students to record their experiences. In a field, a student used two planks of wood and walked to the far end of the field, whilst the others watched. They were amazed that they could see two pieces of wood being banged together and hear the sound two or three seconds later!

To end the week, the students visited Woodlands and the National Marine Aquarium Plymouth. At Woodlands, the students enjoyed the experience of the Water Coasters, sliding down the rapids. One student even dragged every member of staff onto the ride with him, making a total of 9 rides. He enjoyed every ride down and was not bothered about getting wet. 🌊

At the aquarium, the students were mesmerised by the number of fish within the tanks and we were thrilled to see some sharks, stingrays and other tropical fish. Everyone enjoyed the experience so much that we went round twice!🐟🦈

In all, a brilliant week full of fun activities!

Do you know someone with a learning disability who would thrive in a supportive environment?

Last year, we were so proud to be rated Outstanding in Personal Development as we focus on ensuring our students are supported to achieve everything they are capable of, and more! 🩷

One a sunny day at the end of term, Lifeworks students participated in Sports Day down at Totnes Tennis Club.

Some fo the sports included Boccia, Molkky (like skittles but with maths!) and handball. All students had a great time and really worked well on their communication with their team members and developed their teamwork skills.

It was great to see all of the students having fun and putting into practice some of the skills their have been learning throughout the year.

To round off Sports Day, we all enjoyed a nice ice lolly to cool down!

During the final college week before the summer holidays, we had a great visit from Soundart Radio! For this visit, they brought along a researcher from Exeter University to demonstrate that light is not just one colour – and in fact, includes a whole spectrum of colour🌈

During the session, the students got involved with a number of experiments, including the use of a Thermal Camera, allowing us to see heat in different colours through the camera and its UV light.

Everybody had a go of wearing the goggles to see normal lighting in different colours – instead of seeing a white light, we were seeing rainbows through the glasses which was really interesting.

In another experiment, the students used a special lens to look at a light globe, which enabled them to see how colours can change when the light changes. 💡

In all, the students all enjoyed participating in the experiments and getting to try some new hands-on experiences.

We’d like to say a big THANK YOU to Radio for visiting us and for bringing their amazing guest! The session was brilliant! 🤩

At the end of last term, we had the pleasure in taking a number of our young people on their residential to lovely Cornwall!

We kicked off residential in the right way with a stop on route to Lanhydrock, enjoying some lunch and a walk around the beautiful grounds. We then continued to our accommodation and how lucky were we! Each lodge had their own hot tub and lots of space to chill and relax in.

On the Tuesday, we explored The Lost Gardens of Heligan where we all enjoyed spotting the sculptures a we walked around. For those who were brave enough, the wobbly rope bridge was lota of fun too! We finished the day with an eyed-down bingo session with some great prizes.

The following day, we headed off to Newquay Zoo, where watching the penguins being fed was a real highlight. Then, off for seaside fish and chips, some time on the beach and a little paddle. That evening, we entered the Holiday Camp quiz and one of our groups came 2nd!

On the Thursday, we headed to Padstow for the day, where some of us hired some bikes so that we could explore the Camel trail, and others headed to the pitch and putt to perfect their golfing techniques. We all headed back to the pool for a swim and then headed out for dinner. To top off the evening, it was karaoke time – and we must have been good as no neighbours complained!

On the Friday, we had to pack up and say goodbye to Cornwall. We all had such a fantastic time and cannot wait for the next one!

Lifeworks College would like to give a huge shout-out to Soundart Radio 102.5 FM | Community Radio Station for Totnes for the incredible work they’ve been doing with our SEND students!

Thanks to this amazing collaboration, our students have had the unique opportunity to visit the station, experience the world of radio first-hand, and even host their own live radio slots. The confidence and creativity this has inspired has been truly powerful.

SoundArt Radio staff are also working alongside our students and the University of Exeter on a collaborative research project called Light. As part of this, students are exploring digital identity and creative expression.

Beyond this project, the entire experience with SoundArt Radio has supported our students in developing valuable digital and communication skills, empowering them to explore the development of their own independent radio broadcast.

SoundArt Radio are true pioneers in inclusive broadcasting, and our students have enjoyed every single moment of this journey.

Thank you, SoundArt Radio. We appreciate everything you do! 🙌

It’s National Learning Disability Week!

This year, the theme is “Do you see me?”, which is all about ensuring that people with a learning disability are being seen, heard and valued.

At Lifeworks, as Learning Disability Champions, we are extremely passionate about this, and every day, we witness just how powerful inclusion, creativity and the right support can be!

Whether it’s through learning new skills, expressing ourselves through art, building confidence, or forming valuable friendships, our students and young people continue to inspire us! 🩷🩵

Laney has quickly become an integral part of the Lifeworks community, having joined the College a little later in the term.

In her Supported Internship placement, Laney has explored different areas of a business. Demonstrating great self-awareness and confidence, Laney took the initiative to request a change in direction, meaning she found a role that truly suited her strengths.

Did someone say Robot Wars?!

Julian came in and showed us how to make Lego Robots, which were remote-controlled! It was great fun, and as they were remote-controlled, we played Robot Wars on the special Lego floor!
