Good morning everyone. As we commemorate the International Infection Prevention Week, today, we celebrate *Good Hand Hygiene Day,* a global initiative to promote the simplest and most effective way to prevent infections: clean hands.
Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of infection prevention. It's a simple action that saves lives, prevents suffering, saves money and protects our communities.
*Hand Hygiene Matters* because:
1. Prevents Healthcare Associated infections
2. Reduces antimicrobial resistance
3. Protects vulnerable populations (e.g., newborns, elderly)
4. Supports patient safety and quality care
5. Enhances community health and well-being
Statistically, it is a fact that:
a. 1 in 10 patients develops a healthcare-associated infection worldwide (WHO)
b. Hand hygiene compliance rates are often below 50% (CDC)
c. Improved hand hygiene can reduce infection rates by 50-60% (WHO)
*Our Call to Action* therefore is:
1. Healthcare workers: should make hand hygiene a habit.
2. Patients and families: should prioritize HH before and after handling food; before handling a newborn or taking care of an elderly, after doing same; after using the toilet etc
3. Organizations: Prioritize hand hygiene training and provide resources
4. Communities: Promote hand hygiene awareness and education
*We proffer these best practices*
1. Wash hands with soap and running water for 20 seconds.
2. Use hand sanitizer when soap and water unavailable or ash were none is available.
3. Rub hands thoroughly, paying attention to fingers, wrists, and between fingers
4. Clean hands before and after patient contact, after using PPE, and after contact with bodily fluids
We acknowledge the tireless efforts of healthcare workers, infection prevention specialists, and advocates who champion hand hygiene.
*In Conclusion*
Good Hand Hygiene Day reminds us that clean hands save lives. Let's work together to prioritize hand hygiene, protect our communities, and ensure quality care.
Thank you.
