I've received a few messages from worried parents about their child's mental health and the pressure of exams ๐ It can be such a worrying time!
๐ค๏ธ After the Exams: What Our Children Need Most Now Isnโt a Result โ Itโs Reassurance
As exam season winds down, you might expect a sigh of relief from our children. And for some, yesโitโs a time to exhale. But for many others, the quiet after the storm can feel uncertain, even heavy.
Now that the exams are done, hereโs what our children might be carrying:
๐ฐAnxiety about results: โWhat if I failed?โ
๐ขComparison with peers: โEveryone else did better than me.โ
๐ฎโ๐จEmotional exhaustion: โI donโt even know how to feel right now.โ
๐คทA sense of anti-climax: โWas all that pressure even worth it?โ
Even when exams are over, the impact often lingers. This is a crucial time for us, as parents and carers, to tune in closelyโnot to results, but to our childrenโs emotional wellbeing.
What does support look like now?
Give them space to rest without expectation. Recovery matters.
๐ฅณCelebrate the effort, not the outcome. Try saying:
โYou showed up, you tried your best, and thatโs enough.โ
Avoid overanalysing the exams. What's done is doneโruminating only feeds anxiety.
Resist the urge to compare. Every childโs journey is their own.
Reaffirm their worth. Remind them they are loved, valued, and whole, regardless of what the envelope says when results arrive.
They donโt need pressure now. They need presence.
They may feel overwhelmed right now and processing it can bring about all the emotions that they have stored while trying to get through this stressful time.
Letโs remind our children that they are more than gradesโand always have been.
๐ฟ Rest is not laziness. Itโs healing. And our children have earned it ๐ฅฐ
