Did I say I was done with Canada photos….?

Ooops. Sorry.

Flicking through pictures from the last three weeks tonight, I realise, yet again, it’s not the place, it’s the people. A beautiful place is a beautiful place and will bring out the best in us all. But, the colour, meaning, joy and laughter in life come from the humans we view it with.

Bank holiday off, so no classes tomorrow but I cannot wait to see all of the fabulous Loft Studio humans this week

Last ones from Canada. Two days skiing in Whistler. We were so lucky to have both clear skies and slopes. A lot of tears (mine) saying goodbye to Mark and Jess yesterday and today, the Stawamus Chief. A granite pluton, much like El Capitan and Arthur’s seat.
A big climb.
With ladders.
And chains.
And precipitous drops.
With only one fully functioning lung and a sore knee!
I keep thinking about the line in Lord of the Rings - ‘one cannot, simply walk into Mordor’
Nor Canada
It’s been immense and I am so lucky to have had the opportunity.

Look forward to seeing you all next week 🙏❤️🙏

So pleased with the off piste skiing and then you know what comes after pride, off piste falling over. A fantastic snow shoe walk and today, a long drive to Whistler.
Also, learning to Cross country ski 🤦‍♀️
Another thing to add to the list of deeply humbling, lifetime to learn and makes you ache in places you didn’t know you had….
You all have yoga for that! I hope it is much less painful.
Most classes running with Nick this week except Tuesday PM - no class. Monday evening beginners with Ali.
Also note, studio will be closed on bank holiday Monday April 6th.

Last week we had a restorative and pranayama theme, with a focus on Antara and Bahya Kumbhaka, internal and external retention of the breath.
With the Cornishman away for a week, I began to dwell on the whole notion of space, yes in the breath, but also many other in-between places.
Think of the moment you know you are about to wake up, but, there are a pure few seconds before consciousness reaches the surface and your day begins.
The moment in the middle of the day when like the sun, our energy is high.
In the evening the opposite, we slowly draw ourselves back in and become quiet.
And bedtime, tucking in, perfect stillness before sleep.
In yoga we have a strong focus on creating space between joints. There are spaces between poses, even within the stages of individual poses. The space between, body, mind and breath. The more you think about it......
My favourite 'in-between' is after savasana, savoring the benefits of the practice and preparing for the rest of the day.
In Sanskrit there is a word for this concept, Sandhi. I think it is a beautiful thing to feel that when we need 'space' it is always right there, within us.

The photos show another in-between. Where I walked to and where I had come from yesterday! Any guesses?

And on that note, this week, legs!

Well backbends I promised, backbends we did! A thoroughly enjoyable week.
Following the vigour and hard work of last week, we’ll be putting a lid on some of that energy.
Restorative, pranayama and the underrated quality of stillness

Home again. To weather that hinted at Spring yesterday.
Time then I think to look at the posterior chain, open our hearts, expand the chest and be brave!
(Here is my daughter in ustrasana for a flavour of what’s to come - with a little help from my grandson!)

Emotional stability workshop Saturday. I really enjoyed working with 12 very different students, pondering how practice positively affects our mental state. When we are in restorative poses we have nothing left to prove. Standings announce how we are (balanced, steady, strong?!) to the world, and ourselves.
The inversions offer a different perspective, turn the world and its problems upside down.
And friends on long walks. They do all those things too.
Looking forward to a twisty kind of week
