** Cornwall Sterile Services Department - refurbishment project underway **

The Cornwall Sterile Services Department, located in one of the North Buildings opposite the large helipad, is getting a makeover. This department cleans 3.3 million instruments and medical devices a year, and plays a critical role in medical services across the whole of Cornwall, not just RCHT.

Works include installing a new ceiling in the clean room and upgrading the wash room to improve work flow efficiencies. Find out more; click on the link to watch the project film.

** Falmouth Uni student artwork celebrated **

It was a pleasure last week to host final year illustration students from Falmouth University to view their works of art in the new Outpatient Department at West Cornwall Hospital. Their illustrations, all themed to promote wellbeing, are brightening up the corridors and waiting areas.
We also hosted Cllr Jim McKenna, who was instrumental in getting this project over the line, on a walkabout of the new unit.

** Cath lab 1 is officially opened at Royal Cornwall Hospital **

The newly-refurbished Catheter Laboratory (Cath Lab) 1 was given the red-ribbon treatment earlier week at its official opening.

Cardiac clinicians and capital projects team members celebrated the end of the project which also saw the replacement and installation of new imaging equipment for an improved clinical and patient experience, an upgraded air handling unit and new changing room facilities for staff.

It was the turn of our CEO, Steve Williamson to take a look around the new Outpatients Department at West Cornwall Hospital yesterday when he came to celebrate the end of the poject with staff and the project teams from RCHT and construction partner, Kier.

The new outpatient department provides a modern, accessible and patient-focused environment that will enhance acute healthcare services and facilities for the people of West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The new building has some technically-enhanced features that allows staff to provide face-to-face as well as virtual clinical care, and which is already facilitating the delivery of a comprehensive range of outpatient services.

The new Outpatient Department’s project team also collaborated with Falmouth University. Final year illustration students were invited to submit works of art for one of their end of year modules – and all of which are exhibited throughout the new building.

Over time, natural wear and erosion had caused the paving slabs in the Mermaid Centre courtyard to become unstable, creating a health and safety risk. As a result, patients and staff were unable to safely use this valuable outdoor space.

As part of their social value commitment on the Sterile Services project, members of the Fox Construction team have stepped in to help! They’ve worked to re-stabilise and refit the slabs, making the courtyard safe, accessible, and welcoming once again.

With the improvements now complete, patients and staff can enjoy this outdoor area, just in time for the summer sunshine! ☀️

Delighted to showcase a few photos of West Cornwall Hospital's new Outpatient Department which welcomed its first patients last week.
Great work from construction partners, especially senior site manager, Karl Martin and from our own project team here at RCHT - Lewis Saundry Lynda Sherfield and Rachel Louise Purchase.
Already a huge number of compliments from patients and staff about the light and airy space, excellent accessibility and very fine art work from 3rd year illustration students from Falmouth University

* West Cornwall Hospital - parking update *

We're very nearly at the end of the construction phase for the new Outpatient Department at West Cornwall Hospital. Final touches are being made so that we can open the unit to patients on Monday 2 June 2025.

The focus for the next two weeks is to get the car park and footpaths finished. This means that access will be severely restricted at the front of the hospital, and temporary accessible parking will be out of use between 7am and 5pm. This is so the contractor can safely create the new car park entrance, as well as the permanent accessible spaces and new pavement in front of the main reception.

Two 15-minute drop-off spaces have been re-provided in the main entranceway of the existing contractor’s compound and all blue badge holders will need to park on the double yellow lines coming into Parc Wartha Crescent. Renal patients have been advised of this change and offered hospital transport for the duration of these works.

Pedestrian access has been re-routed temporarily via the existing contractor compound entrance and along the new outpatient building into the hospital. The walkway is fenced to protect our visitors.

Regular parking for patients and visitors is available at St Erbyn’s car park, and Causewayhead Car Park, both approximately 200m from the hospital entrance.

We ask all users of West Cornwall Hospital continue to respect the residents living in the immediate vicinity and not to park in such as way as to block driveways or indeed to impede their own parking requirements close to their homes.

*Tower Theatre Storeroom Refurbishment*

The Tower Theatre storeroom in Tower Block basement has now been refurbished following a sewage leak. The project ensured that the room was restored to its former usage but also included upgrades to improve the space, this included:

- The installation of an extractor fan
- Whiterock installed throughout the store
- Installation of a ceiling grid

These additions will ensure the space stays clean and tidy and has improved the working environment for the staff.

Thank you to Aaron Franklin and Stavros Ballas, their teams and Nevada Construction Ltd who worked with our project team to complete the project on time and within the allocated budget.

** Revamp for TAG x-ray room 1 **

Our Trauma, Acute, and General Radiography x-ray room 1 (the main A&E x-ray machine) at the back of the Emergency Department has had an upgrade and revamp! The x-ray equipment has been replaced with a new Siemens machine. The refurbishment has also included new skylights with an underwater theme, and wall art to cheer up the area and enhance the patient experience.

We had a fantastic morning at West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance this morning where we officially opened the new Changing Places Facility.
We were honoured to have Rachel George and son Adam cut the ribbon for us.
