Helping Your Neurodivergent Child Navigate Friendship

Friendships can feel a little… rocky for neurodivergent children—and that’s okay 💛

Social rules aren’t always clear, interactions can feel overwhelming, and things don’t always go to plan. But with the right support, children can build meaningful connections in ways that feel natural to them.

We’re sharing simple, supportive ways to help your child navigate friendships—without trying to change who they are.

✨ Because connection doesn’t have to look “typical” to be real.

This stage of life asks us to mourn the energy, body, and identity we once knew, while also inviting us to step into a new version of ourselves—stronger, wiser, and more aligned.

🤍 Grief and growth can coexist, and both deserve space.

🌈 Today, on World Autism Awareness Day, let’s move beyond awareness toward understanding and acceptance.

💭 Autistic individuals navigate a world not always built for them—yet their perspectives, strengths, and creativity are invaluable. True support comes from listening, adapting, and valuing differences rather than expecting conformity.

♥️ Inclusion isn’t a favour—it’s a necessity.

⚡️ is a reminder that chaos is part of life — but constant overwhelm doesn’t have to be.

Your nervous system isn’t designed to stay in overdrive. Finding calm isn’t about escaping life, but creating small moments to reset.

💭 Stress activates your body’s fight-or-flight response, increasing heart rate, muscle tension, and stress hormones, which—over time—can leave you feeling physically and mentally exhausted.

💭 Pause. Breathe. Step outside. Move your body. Put your phone down.

These small moments tell your brain: you are safe.

🌶 Every home has its rhythm — neurospicy households just have their own unique one.

In many neurodivergent homes, the little things make the biggest difference. The “unspoken rules” often become the foundations that help everyone feel safe, regulated, and understood.

✨ Quiet spaces are respected
✨ Headphones often mean “do not disturb”
✨ Clear communication is key
✨ Routines help create calm
✨ Everyone has a space to decompress when things feel overwhelming

These small but powerful boundaries help create an environment where people can regulate their emotions, feel supported, and be themselves without pressure.

💭 Because the spaces we exist in — whether at home or in therapy — play a huge role in how safe we feel to open up. That’s why creating calm, welcoming environments matters so much when it comes to emotional wellbeing.

If you’re looking for a supportive space designed with comfort and emotional safety in mind, get in touch for your free 1:1 consultation with our leading therapists. ♥️

Drink your coffee while it’s still hot ☕

💭 It sounds simple, but how often do we rush through our days without really being present? Our minds jump to the next task, the next worry, the next thing on the to-do list — and before we know it, the small moments pass us by.

Being present doesn’t have to mean long meditations or perfect mindfulness. Sometimes it simply means pausing for a moment, taking a breath, and actually enjoying the coffee in front of you while it’s still warm.

💡These small pauses can help us slow down, reset, and reconnect with ourselves. They remind us that wellbeing isn’t always about doing more — sometimes it’s about noticing what’s already here.

So today, take a moment for yourself.
Sit down. Breathe.
And drink your coffee while it’s still hot.

♥️ If you’re feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, you don’t have to face it alone — we’re here to help. Reach out to learn more about the support available. We offer a free 1:1 consultation with every enquiry.

💭Shouting out for !

We wanted to take a moment share how important it is to recognise that neurodivergence isn’t just about challenges — it’s also about unique ways of thinking, creating, and experiencing the world.

Many neurodivergent people have strengths that bring fresh perspectives and powerful contributions to everyday life, work, and relationships.

Often neurodivergence can manifest as:

✨ Creativity – seeing possibilities and ideas others may not notice
✨ Deep focus – the ability to fully immerse in interests and passions
✨ Pattern recognition – spotting connections and details others may overlook
✨ Unique problem-solving – approaching challenges from completely different angles

💪🏼 These strengths are part of what makes neurodivergent thinking so valuable.

Different brains bring different perspectives — and that diversity helps our communities grow, innovate, and understand the world in richer ways.

Does your child get overwhelmed? ⚡️

Balloon breathing is a simple & easy grounding exercise for all ages AND this can be used when kids feel overwhelmed, anxious, angry, or need a quick calm-down reset 🎈

Here’s how it works:

1. Balloon Breathing (1 minute or less)
Put hands on belly
Breathe in through the nose like inflating a balloon (count to 4)
Breathe out through the mouth like letting the air out (count to 5)
Repeat 3–4 times

💡 It’s good to practice this in calm moments too, even have a balloon at hand to help make it feel fun. With practice this is a easy tool to utilise at home, school or anywhere.

We have practitioners who specialise in child therapy. If you have been considering therapy for your child get in touch, we offer a free 50 min consultation to chat through how we can help.
