St Piran’s Day is here, bright though the rain may fall,
The black and white flag flies in the restless wind.
The sea speaks gladly in rolling waves and song.

Through village streets the music plays,
Drums and fiddles lift the dancing feet.

👂🏻🌏 W O R L D H E A R I N G D A Y ‘26’ 🌍👂🏻

The aim of this day has always been to raise awareness of hearing loss, and ear health. Also to highlight and encourage preventive measures, such as safe listening habits and early screening.

The official theme for 2026 is :
“From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children.” 

This highlights the importance of:
👂🏻 Preventing avoidable childhood hearing loss, which affects around 90 million children and adolescents worldwide.
👂🏻 Promoting early identification and care for children with ear or hearing issues.
👂🏻 Using communities and school settings as natural platforms for screening, raising awareness, education, and referral to care services. 

Common, preventable and treatable causes of hearing loss—such as otitis media with effusion, chronic suppurative otitis media, and impacted ear wax—remain widely prevalent in children. However at times children can also have progressive losses which can lie undetected.

Locally in Cornwall we have a couple of systems in place to help with early detection; The Newborn hearing screen program, and school hearing screens.
Early identification of hearing problems, can help prevent issues with speech and language, cognitive and social development.

Referrals can be made by your GP, school nurse or health visitor if you have any concerns about a child’s hearing.

The vestibular system is the part of your inner ear that helps you keep your balance and know which way your head is moving.

Think of it like your body’s built-in level and motion sensor.

It helps you to:
🧍 Stay upright
🚶 Walk without falling
👀 Keep your eyes steady when your head moves
🔄 Know if you’re turning, tilting, or moving up and down

Inside your inner ear, there are tiny fluid-filled tubes called semicircular canals and small balance organs called the utricle and saccule.

When you move your head:
1. The fluid inside moves.
2. Tiny hair cells detect that movement.
3. Signals are sent to your brain.
4. Your brain adjusts your muscles and eye movements to keep you balanced.

If you spin around quickly and stop:
• The fluid in your inner ear keeps moving for a moment.
• Your brain thinks you’re still spinning.
• You feel dizzy.

That’s your vestibular system at work!

One of our patients arrived to their appointment, thinking they had a wax blockage.
On examination there was some wax present, but in behind the wax was a dome from their hearing aid, that they hadn’t realised had become detached.
All carefully and successfully removed with Microsuction and crocs ✅

👂🏻 C O N G E S T I O N 👂🏻

It is very common after a cold to experience muffled hearing. Congestion can sit in behind the eardrum, and can take a good amount of time to clear.

Sometimes you can try steaming with a Vicks or Olbas in hot water (to be avoided if you are asthmatic). This can help to clear all the tubes within the ears and nose, helping to shift congestion. If this problem does persist, then it is advisable to seek advice from your GP as an onward referral maybe required.

As always if your hearing suddenly changes, and it is not due to wax, then you should present to a medical professional as this should be acted on as a matter of urgency

🤔 D I D Y O U K N O W ? 🤔

Many people don’t realise that you can still get a ‘free’ full diagnostic hearing test, and hearing aids through the health service.

You simply need to ensure your ears are clear of wax (this bit we can help with), and then request a hearing test from your GP. They will then be able to refer you into an NHS service.

Once referred your Audiologist/hearing care provider will check the full range of hearing frequencies, which is thorough and precise. They will also test bone conduction to establish what is causing any hearing difficulties.

They will advise whether hearing aids are appropriate, and where necessary will arrange to fit NHS hearing aids.

They can also refer onto ENT for any hearing anomalies, or to the hearing therapy team who can help and assist with any rehabilitation, sensitivity or tinnitus issues.

If we are your chosen provider for wax removal, we follow BSA (British society of Audiologists) protocols, that after wax removal, you should leave at least 72hrs before having a hearing test. This is to ensure that the most accurate results are obtained.
