🤔 Cancer awareness this November 🤔
🤗 At In Caring Hands (ICH), we are dedicated to providing compassionate, person-centred support for older people and those with complex needs. The safety, dignity and quality of life of those we care for are always our top priorities.
🤒 Each month in the UK, awareness is raised for different types of cancer. In November, the focus is on lung, mouth and pancreatic cancers, conditions that predominantly affect older people. Our carers play an essential role in recognising early symptoms, offering support during treatment and helping to preserve quality of life for those affected.
🔎 Recognising symptoms
Our carers are trained to identify and report persistent or new symptoms, including:
•Unexplained weight loss
•Ongoing cough or breathlessness
•Persistent mouth sores or difficulty swallowing
•Unexplained abdominal pain or changes in bowel habits
•Unexplained fatigue or marked changes in appetite
•New or changing lumps or skin changes
🦻 Supporting people with communication difficulties
Sometimes, there may be subtle behavioural or functional changes in individuals who have difficulty communicating. These include things like a reduced appetite, increased confusion, altered sleep patterns, withdrawal from activities or unexplained pain behaviours.
👐 Practical and emotional support during treatment
We assist with practical needs throughout treatment, helping with medication schedules, hydration, nutrition, appointment reminders and providing gentle emotional reassurance.
We work alongside healthcare professionals to monitor pain, nausea and fatigue closely, reporting any new symptoms promptly so clinicians can adjust treatment as necessary.
