👵 Inclusion for older people at ICH 👴

🫴 In Caring Hands (ICH) provides compassionate, person-centred care for older adults with complex needs, prioritising dignity, sensory safety and meaningful community connections.

❌ Older people are often overlooked because others assume they cannot engage. True inclusion means seeing more than the exterior appearance and getting to know the individual person. We value individual preferences and life history.

👏 Our carers carefully choose the best places to visit with our service users and, when necessary, will brief hosts, request reasonable adjustments, and model inclusive interactions so community venues learn how to welcome everyone.

🪟 We balance safe practice with enabling experiences, developing local partnerships that widen access to parks, events and everyday community life.

🎆 Guy Fawkes Night safety guidance for older people 🎆

👐 In Caring Hands (ICH) is committed to delivering compassionate, person-centred care and practical support for older people. We always place safety, dignity, and quality of life at the heart of what we do.

😣 Understanding the risks

Guy Fawkes Night can be particularly unsettling for older people, especially those with sensory sensitivity, dementia, or limited mobility. The sudden bangs, bright flashes, and large crowds associated with fireworks displays may trigger distress, disorientation, or increased agitation. However, with thoughtful preparation, these risks can be minimised.

🎇 Practical steps to reduce distress

•Consider watching fireworks displays from a safe distance or opt for enjoying a recorded display at home, where the environment is controlled and familiar.

•Introduce noise-reduction measures such as tried and tested noise-cancelling headphones or soft ear defenders to help muffle loud sounds.

•Close windows and curtains to further reduce noise and block out bright flashes from fireworks.

•Stick to familiar routines to lessen sensory surprises and provide reassurance.

📝 Preparation and support if attending an event

•Give a brief explanation of the evening’s events to help reduce uncertainty.

•Create a clear support plan that includes preferred calming strategies, medication needs, and emergency contacts.

If you or a loved one requires additional support, In Caring Hands provides tailored care for older adults in the comfort of their own homes. For more information about our services, please visit our website at: https://www.in-caring-hands.co.uk/community-social-care/

🤔 Cancer awareness this November 🤔

🤗 At In Caring Hands (ICH), we are dedicated to providing compassionate, person-centred support for older people and those with complex needs. The safety, dignity and quality of life of those we care for are always our top priorities.

🤒 Each month in the UK, awareness is raised for different types of cancer. In November, the focus is on lung, mouth and pancreatic cancers, conditions that predominantly affect older people. Our carers play an essential role in recognising early symptoms, offering support during treatment and helping to preserve quality of life for those affected.

🔎 Recognising symptoms

Our carers are trained to identify and report persistent or new symptoms, including:

•Unexplained weight loss

•Ongoing cough or breathlessness

•Persistent mouth sores or difficulty swallowing

•Unexplained abdominal pain or changes in bowel habits

•Unexplained fatigue or marked changes in appetite

•New or changing lumps or skin changes

🦻 Supporting people with communication difficulties

Sometimes, there may be subtle behavioural or functional changes in individuals who have difficulty communicating. These include things like a reduced appetite, increased confusion, altered sleep patterns, withdrawal from activities or unexplained pain behaviours.

👐 Practical and emotional support during treatment

We assist with practical needs throughout treatment, helping with medication schedules, hydration, nutrition, appointment reminders and providing gentle emotional reassurance.

We work alongside healthcare professionals to monitor pain, nausea and fatigue closely, reporting any new symptoms promptly so clinicians can adjust treatment as necessary.

Malnutrition Week is an important reminder for older people

🤗 Here at In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, we provide in‑home care and support for older people who need a little extra help each day.

🦴 Last week was Malnutrition Week in the UK and it’s useful as a reminder that malnutrition isn’t only a problem in countries with famine but can happen right here in the UK, especially among older people.

🤐 Common causes of malnutrition include long‑term health conditions, memory issues, difficulty chewing or swallowing, reduced mobility or access to shopping and cooking, loneliness or depression, medication side effects, and financial pressures.

🍽️ Our carers monitor our service users and, where possible, ensure they receive nutrient‑dense meals and fortified snacks. We encourage sociable mealtimes and work with families and health professionals to create personalised nutrition plans.

👉 At ICH we’re more than just a team of carers; we’re a family. We’re here to provide a full range of care services to older people in their own homes. Find out more on our website: https://www.in-caring-hands.co.uk/community-social-care/

🍰 Cooking up fun times for older people at ICH 🍰

🥄 At In Caring Hands (ICH) Cornwall, we care for older people in the comfort of their own homes. This month National Baking Week runs from the 14th to the 20th of October and National Chocolate Week follows from the 16th to the 22nd of October, so at ICH we’ll be helping our service users celebrate!

🍫 Baking and chocolate projects provide rich, multi-sensory experiences that are easy to adapt and highly rewarding. The smells, warm textures and tastes, and the sight of colourful decorations all provide meaningful sensory input that can have a calming, stimulating or soothing effect. Such experiences can help older people reminisce, express their preferences, and feel connected to the world.

☺️ This could be achieved by visiting a chocolate shop or café, or by creating something delicious at home. Activities like this open up the world for older people, bringing them together and helping them build social connections.

👉 Would you like to see an older loved one's face light up when they see chocolate icing? Find out more about what we offer at ICH and how you can bring compassionate care and a love of cake to them! Visit our website to find out more and help us bake brighter days together.

🍚 ICH and National Porridge Week & World Porridge Day 🍚

🍂 As Autumn approaches and the days grow cooler, we are reminded that many of the older people whom we support in the comfort of their own homes, could become cold or hungry without our care.

🥣 National Porridge Week takes place from October 7th to 15th, and World Porridge Day is on October 10th, further reinforcing this reminder.

☺️ At In Caring Hands, we aim to minimise any discomfort that could affect our service users. We achieve this by conducting regular comfort checks that incorporate tailored routines, including consistent mealtimes and warm snacks, to ensure that they are comfortable, nourished and safe.

🤗 We also remember the bigger picture that World Porridge Day highlights: food security and dignified care for everyone, everywhere.

🤗 ICH supporting early-stage Alzheimer’s at home 🤗

🧑‍⚕️ When a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is received, it can be devastating. It’s a condition that not only affects the individual but often their family as they navigate the slow progressive loss of their loved one. September marks Alzheimer’s Month, a time to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and its impact on lives.

👉 More information can be found here:https://www.alzint.org/u/World-Alzheimers-Month-2025_Campaign-Toolkit-English_V2.pdf

💁‍♀️ At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, our community carers provide compassionate support for older adults who are living at home and experiencing the early stages of Alzheimer’s.

🔎 Early Signs to Watch For:

· Memory loss that interferes with daily life, such as forgetting important dates

· Difficulty planning or solving problems, like managing bills or following a recipe

· Challenges completing familiar tasks, for example, driving a well-known route

· Confusion with time or place, losing track of dates or suddenly not knowing how you arrived somewhere

· Trouble finding the right words or following conversations

· Changes in mood or personality, including increased anxiety or withdrawal

· Pulling back from social activities and favourite hobbies

🧠 At In Caring Hands, we can help by providing tailored in-home care plans that adapt to each person’s daily routines, carers trained in dementia awareness and person-centred communication, assistance with daily activities, medication reminders and safety checks. Other ways we help include cognitive stimulation through memory games, music therapy and meaningful engagements.

🖼️ Supporting urinary health and dignity with ICH 🖼️

🫴 At In Caring Hands (ICH) we provide compassionate home care for older people with diverse needs. Our carers deliver personalised support, ensuring every service user enjoys comfort, respect and expert guidance, right where they feel safest.

🔵 Urology Awareness Month runs throughout September in the UK, shining a spotlight on urinary tract health; from common infections and incontinence to kidney stones and prostate concerns. For older adults, these conditions can be painful, confusing and impact quality of life, especially if symptoms go unspoken.

💧 Early detection and prevention is good practice, so our carers monitor hydration and fluid intake/output when possible to spot warning signs such as cloudy or strong-smelling urine, urgency, discomfort or sudden confusion.

🚽 Continence support means we tailor continence care plans, in partnership with GPs and community nurses, to manage bladder weakness or catheter needs with dignity.

👉 If you’re looking for a community care service that treats urinary health with the respect and attention it deserves, discover our full range of services today: https://www.in-caring-hands.co.uk/community-social-care/
