Cornwall Food and Drink

Cornwall Food and Drink We're the hub for Cornwall's first class food and drink. Everything we do is about helping food and drink businesses to get ahead. To delight new audiences. Why?

To help build brands. And yes to help them make more money. To employ more people. To be able to pay them better. To train them better. To help make Cornwall’s entire food and drink system tick – louder, faster and longer. It’s our version of sustainability. Since 2016 we've also owned and run the Great Cornish Food Store, next to Waitrose in Truro, the UK's first 100% local independent food and drink store under the same roof as a major supermarket.

Put your thoughts on a future champion for Cornwall's tourism industry across by Sunday 11th January...

Anyone involved in tourism is being invited to take part in a survey to help shape a new, collaborative Destination Management Organisation (DMO) to champion the Duchy’s visitor economy. Food and drink play a vital role in tourism so it is critical that voices from agriculture, fishing, production, processing, hospitality, wholesale and retail are heard.

Following the loss of Visit Cornwall, businesses, tourism-related associations, tourist information centres and local councils are being asked what they want to see from a new DMO and how the organisation should be structured.

Working in partnership with Cornwall Council, the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Economic Forum has appointed a small working group of representatives from the tourism sector to help produce the survey.

Feedback from the survey will be presented during an event at the Eden Project in late January, where industry leaders and sector representatives will come together to discuss the next steps in establishing the new organisation.

We’re delighted to announce Richard Bain is joining us as Managing Director, alongside founder and driving force Ruth Huxley. Ruth established the store in 2016, showcasing entirely local food and drink sourced from over 200 suppliers.

The business also created and delivers a development programme for the wider agrifood industry of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Alongside Ruth, Richard will lead our team of around 40, managing the store and championing Cornwall’s top-quality food and drink. Ruth plans to retire some time next year and move to a non-executive role.

Richard brings a wealth of experience to his new role here. He has held key positions in food manufacturing with well-known brands. He came to Cornwall initially to take up the role of production director at Ginsters. Richard joins us from Bodmin-based Buttermilk Confections, where he has been operations director for the past three and a half years.

Richard first met Ruth while he was part of the Cornish Pasty Association board, it was there that he started to develop his understanding of the wider Cornish food industry, particularly smaller enterprises, and the positive impact that a collective approach can generate.

Richard and Ruth have very different backgrounds but together they share a common goal of wanting our food, drink, farming and fishing businesses to thrive. To that end they will be working together to help the Great Cornish Food Store and those in and around the sector realise their full potential.

He is excited to join the team here and take on the unique opportunity to work with the whole community of food and drink producers across Cornwall and Scilly.

Everyone here is looking forward to working with Richard and we’re delighted to think Ruth will be able to hand over the reins next year with full confidence that under his leadership the business will continue to go from strength to strength.

We've been busy over the Spring and Summer making a series of films featuring
Great Cornish Food Award winners, including Fishing for the Future winners Island Fish Ltd
Not content with catching and cooking sustainable, freshly caught, local fish and shellfish, this family business even trades on the seabed. Start walking from Flood Hatch at 11.51 if you’re lucky enough to be on Tresco Island on Tuesday 9th September where you’ll find Island Fish for just over an hour serving the freshest seafood, along with a host of local food and drink producers.
Once the tide turns and floods the channel this magical event disappears until the Spring and if you miss it there’s always the Visit Isles of Scilly Taste of Scilly Festival from 12-21 September. To watch the extended film about Island Fish or for festival information head to the links in our comments below 👇 🐟🦀🦞

Over two days in October, the Great Cornish Seafood Weekend showcased the unbeatable fishing and seafood of Cornwall and Scilly. 300 people learned from fishermen, fishmongers and chefs all about the lesser-known (but plentiful and sustainable) species and how to prep and cook them.

30 young farmers and young fishermen met up at a special social in the summer to compare and contrast their different livelihoods and encourage the next generation into their industries.

7 artisan food and drink producers from Scilly came to the Great Cornish Food Store in November to test the mainland market and meet new trade customers.
