I honestly cannot tell you how many people ask me this, or sometimes they don’t ask but they just look at me thinking what on earth is she on about 😆 but I don’t mind at all 😇

One of the things we become very good at as physios is communicating how and why we can help, so here I go!

Usually when people think of ‘physio’, they think of when they have seen a physiotherapist to help their joint or muscle pain, or for rehab after their knee surgery for example 💪🏻

This type of physio is totally invaluable, and is for the musculoskeletal system, however there are lots of other types of physiotherapy, of which physio for the breathing (respiratory) system is one of them 🙋🏼‍♀️

🫁 Respiratory physio can be delivered in many different settings – the ICU, hospital wards, community groups, clinics, the patient’s home, and can help with the following:

- Keeping your lungs clear of secretions
- Preventing chest infections
- Recovery after an operation
- Helping you live with chronic lung conditions
- Helping you be active and independent
- Improving your quality of life
- Assessing your oxygen levels
- Decreasing levels of breathlessness
- Improving your breathing pattern
- Decreasing breathing related anxiety

Sounds simple doesn’t it? After all, breathing should be the most natural and automatic thing in the world, but so many people get it wrong, or struggle with it.

My job as a respiratory physio is to help my patients get the most out of their breathing - whether they have a perfectly healthy set of lungs and need to learn how to breathe better; or whether they have a lung disease or condition and experience symptoms such as breathlessness, reduced exercise tolerance, and/or chest infections.
I see all manner of patients, with all kinds of conditions, but the 5 most common are:
1) COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease),
2) Long COVID,
3 Bronchiectasis,
4) Breathing Pattern Disorders,
5) Asthma.

Do you struggle with your breathing or know anyone who does?

The panoramic view from the top of Brae Hill never gets old 🤩 Wilf loves it too! 🐶 I’ve been working on nose breathing the whole way up + at the top.
Lots of people find it hard to sustain nasal breathing during exercise because it feels much easier to breathe through the mouth - the mouth is much bigger in diameter than the nostrils, so we can gasp air in quickly when we feel we need it most.
The problem is, when you breathe hard and fast through your mouth, not only is it incredibly drying, but breathing is inefficient and top heavy, often making you feel more breathless sooner than you should… This is because the smaller breathing muscles in the upper chest become tired very quickly, and when this happens, our bodies will divert blood flow from large muscle groups (such as the quadriceps in the front of our thighs) to support and prioritise respiration. This is why our legs can feel like lead weights during intense exercise, making us slow down and stop.
Ultimately, 👃 breathing is 22% more efficient vs 👄 breathing. This greater efficiency leads to better stamina and endurance, so you can power through to the finish line, or to the top! ⛰️💪🏻

Did you know the nose has tonnes of benefits? 👃 firstly, it humidifies the air we breathe, this means it moistens the air that hits the back of our throat and then enters our airways; a big bonus for maintaining airway hydration, lubrication, and hygiene.
👃 secondly, it helps filters the air, filtering out any nasties; think pollution, allergens etc.
👃 thirdly, it controls the flow of the breath, encouraging laminar flow (ie smooth movement). This is super important when we think about what optimal breathing looks like.
👃 finally, nasal breathing produces nitric oxide (NO). NO is a vasodilator. This means your blood vessels widen, and it can help improve oxygen circulation in your body.
Can you breathe comfortably through your nose? What about when moving/ talking / exercising?!

It’s hard to believe our babies are this small in those early days, but these early weeks/months/years highlight those innate breathing patterns that we are all born with…
👶🏼 We are all born natural nasal breathers,
👶🏼 This is primarily so we can breathe and feed at the same time via the breast/bottle,
👶🏼 There are several reasons why a newborn baby may not be able to nose breathe, and this can affect feeding, so please consult your doctor if this is the case,
👶🏼 Mouth breathing will occur in newborn babies when they are distressed / crying,
👶🏼 Mouth breathing will increase as the child grows… but why?…

👋🏻 I’m Emily - a respiratory physio based in Cornwall. Most people look at me like this 🧐 when I tell them I’m a respiratory physiotherapist, and I don’t blame them(!) so here’s a bit about what I do…
🫁 respiratory physios are trained physiotherapists by background, with a specialism in the breathing system,
🫁 I treat and can help anyone who has problems with their breathing, whether it is someone with a chronic lung condition (asthma, COPD etc); someone suffering from panic attacks and/or anxiety; someone recovering from long-covid; or someone looking to optimise their performance for an event/activity… the list goes on…
🫁 I have a special interest in optimising the WAY we breathe - there is so much more to breathing than many people realise: it forms the foundation of our health and well-being; it should happen automatically; it should be effortless… but for many people it isn’t these things, and that’s where I can help 😊
