Truro BID

Truro BID Information on Truro BID's activities & businesses matters for those working in Truro City Centre. We first became operational in October 2007.

Truro Business Improvement District (BID) is a business led initiative which gives businesses the power to raise funds locally to be spent locally on improving a defined commercial area. Truro BID represents circa 380 Truro businesses and from 2007 to 2017 invested £3.4million into the City centre. We’re now in our fourth 5 year term, which runs until October 2027. We are independent from local authorities and other statutory agencies and deliver projects over and above the baseline service provided by them. Some of our work includes:

∙ Delivering and funding Truro’s annual City Centre Christmas Lights scheme (along with past donations from Lionel and Carol Knight).

∙ Enhancing the festive offer with street entertainment, large scale projections on buildings, traffic-free main shopping streets, markets, and supporting Coppice Theatre shows and Father Christmas grottos.

∙ Delivering the Truro Trend high-profile Catwalk at the Cathedral.

∙ Initiating and supporting one day markets; e.g. the Duchy Fair’s Cornwall Shop Small Markets and Truro Antiques and Collectables Markets.

∙ Joint-funding with Truro City Council the annual floral hanging baskets each spring.

∙ Working with Visit Truro to promote the city, including contributing financially to printed marketing activity (Truro Guides) and Visit Truro’s website.

∙ Representing the interests of businesses on plans for the Pydar Regeneration and Truro Town Fund investment plan.

Roads and public transport remain disrupted this morning as we deal with the aftermath of Storm Goretti.

Please avoid travelling if you can. If you do need to make a journey, check routes and travel operators in advance, as many bus and rail services are cancelled or running with delays.

A large number of roads are still closed due to fallen trees, downed power lines and debris. Our teams are working around the clock to clear them, and we ask that you give crews the space they need to carry out urgent repairs safely.

Thank you to all the businesses who helped to make Truro sparkle even more over the festive season by having a Reindeer Christmas Light within their premises.

We have started to collect the reindeer light and the plastic A5 stands which accompanied them. As there are 90 to collect this may take some time.

However, if you'd like to help us and return your reindeer Christmas light (along with the plug and plastic stand), please drop it in to the Truro BID meeting room, upstairs in Truro Library.

If you do drop your reindeer light back, please attach a note to your reindeer with business premises name on so we know which ones have been returned. Thank you!

Wales & West Utilities started a project yesterday (Monday 5 January) to upgrade the gas pipes in the St Austell Street area of Truro.

The project is vital to ensuring that gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area, helping to keep people warm for decades to come.

Businesses will continue to be open for customers during this period.

Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Cornwall Council, and it has been agreed that between 5 January – 9 February, the following closures will be in place:
- New Bridge St, between the junctions of Duke St and St Clement St
- Duke St, between the junctions of Boscawen St and New Bridge St
- St Mary’s St, between the junctions of High Cross and New Bridge St
- Mitchell Hill, between the junctions of St Clement St and James Place

As part of the project, multi-way traffic lights will be on St Clement St, Austell St and Furniss Close.

It is hoped that the works should be completed by 9 February.
Diversion routes will be clearly signposted, and motorists are advised to allow extra time for travel. Times, dates and durations are subject to change.

If you have further queries about the project, you can call Wales and West on 0800 912 2999, message them on X (), or visit their page at Wales & West Utilities.

In light of the upcoming changes to Business Rates from the recent Autumn Budget, which will come into effect from April 2026, the Government have produced a factsheet.

This outlines both the rateable value increase (which are set by the Valutation Office Agency) and the rate of tax reductions (known as the ‘multiplier’).

The next Shop Watch meeting is on Tuesday 3 February 2026. There is no Shop Watch Meeting in January.

All Truro businesses are invited to attend the next Shop Watch meeting, which will be held next Tuesday 3 February 10am at: Training Room 4a, Pydar House, Pydar St, TR1 1XU.

Shop Watch meetings provide businesses with a chance to share city centre crime related topics, local knowledge and issues with other businesses, Truro's anti-social behaviour officer, the police and Truro BID.

It would be great to have lots of businesses and organisations joining in so just turn up to the Pydar House meeting location next Tuesday 3 February.

Little Harbour Children's Hospice has a Christmas Tree Recycling Scheme running in Truro, where Biffa are kindly collecting the trees for free in return for a donation to Children's Hospice South West.

The funds raised from this event is entirely from donations as Children's Hospice South West don't receive money from the recycling of the trees. However, a donation will make a real difference for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their whole family across the South West.

This opportunity is open to businesses (and residents) in Truro who may have a real Christmas Tree. For more information see the website and note that you need to register for a Christmas tree collection by Wednesday 7 January.

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿

Our small team at Truro BID would like to wish all the businesses in Truro a very Happy and Healthy New Year.

As communicated last week, we know that it's been yet another very difficult year. However we'd like to thank Truro’s businesses across all sectors for their hard work and determination to maintain the city as a great place to shop, eat, drink and enjoy throughout 2025.

Thank you also to the Truro BID payers that make it possible for us to deliver a wide range of events, projects and services throughout the year for Truro.

A reminder that the Truro BID office is currently closed and will reopen next week on Monday 5 January.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿'𝘀 𝗘𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀

Truro City Council is bringing back its annual New Year’s Eve celebrations tomorrow, Wednesday 31 December.

The evening will begin with a Family Fireworks Display at 7:30pm, followed by the traditional Midnight Display as the clock strikes twelve. Both events are free to attend and best watched from Lemon Quay.

Thanks to support from the local community, the £3 children's voucher scheme will also return. Paul Caruana has organised the voucher scheme where businesses and individuals have given donations. Paul will also be working with a team of volunteers for a New Year’s Day clean up on the grounds of Truro School.

Both the Family Display and Midnight Display are funded by Truro City Council. The fireworks are made possible thanks to Truro School for allowing the use of its grounds as the launch site for the fireworks.

For more information and updates, see Visit Truro at www.visittruro.org.uk and follow Truro City Council on Facebook.

Cormac will begin work on the Town Deal improvements to Lemon Quay on Monday 5 January 2026, for around fourteen weeks.

The final design focuses on enhancing the environmental quality of this important public realm area, creating a more attractive and welcoming space for residents, visitors, and businesses.

The works will start at the Lemon Street end of the Quay and include:
- new street furniture
- soft and hard landscaping
- installation of an urban projection system for events and visual display
- storage for the farmers market
- and cycle parking

Whilst the works may cause some short-term disruption to the general public and business owners, this will be minimal.

Businesses will remain open as usual, there will be no road closures, and pedestrian and vehicular access will be maintained throughout the project.

Updates will be available at https://letstalk.cornwall.gov.uk/truro-town-deal. If you have any queries or require additional information, please contact us Cormac on 0300 1234 222 or email contracting@cormacltd.co.uk
