It was a real pleasure for us to facilitate Session One of Jamie's Ministry of Food UK /Healthy Cornwall Adult-Child Cooking Course at St Stephens Community Academy this week.
These sessions are built around fun, creativity, food exploration and ‘having a go’ in order to build confidence, develop essential cooking skills and trying new alternatives to their usual diets.
The children did themselves proud with such a mature attitude in the school kitchen and their willingness to try new foods. To kick start the block, we learned how to use the correct heat setting on the hobs, and to crack and scramble eggs ‘The Jamie Way’. We learned about different types and colours of eggs, the importance of wholegrains and wholemeal bread rather than white and made our One Cup Pancakes using the white shelled egg variety. The Greek yoghurt and the different coloured eggs were not only a ‘first’ for a number of children, but a big hit, and something they would like to eat again at home. This little group of budding chefs have been given to the task to practice one or both of this week’s recipes over the next week and to feedback on how it all went, taking some photos to share if they would like to. If they are feeling especially adventurous, they also have the recipe for Poached Eggs to have some fun with.
Thank you for a wonderful first session everyone. We look forward to more culinary fun next week!
