I spent the last day or so listening to reading her new book.
Julia speaks to the complexities of family life, how varied our experiences are- even within one family.
The therapeutic process is gently shared within the retelling of their time spent talking and listening. It’s a careful attuned exploration, vulnerability and courage are there- as they always are when people in distress, or ready to reflect and process, come to ask for help from a stranger in the therapy room.

Sometimes the steps we take to ‘improve’ life can seem huge. Last year I wrote a blog about slowing down a bit at this time of year as the rush to start over can mask what we might really need.
Grab another cup of tea and maybe take a read, the links in the comments below. Or just watch the tortoise for a while.

I spent a quiet hour today untangling Christmas lights from a tree, and then from themselves. It felt like a timely metaphor for the therapeutic process.

As I looked at the tree, knowing it had been enthusiastically dressed in the lights, I noticed resistance to tidying up this tired looking scene. The lights and the tree had made a great combination but it begged the question “where shall I begin?’.

It took a bit of investigating, frustration; one untangle forward, two untangles back. Moments of clarity when it looked like I could see the way out of the Christmas mess, disappointment when I found it was another wrong twist. There wasn't so much 'a place to begin', more 'a moment I started'.

Persisting when I felt stuck meant I got there in the end. The tree look exposed, the lights ready for a new start. I had taken that deep breath, and begun.

If you’re looking for therapeutic support to untangle something in your life, do email me.

It’s beautiful outside my office today, I just dawdled a bit as I arrived for the day. I was really struck by the calmness of the view, still water, warm air, clear skies. Noticing too the warning sign ‘5 knots’. And a seat to sit. Often people can look as if their life’s sorted. They have everything and look ok. Yet there are internal tangles that can make really feeling ok a challenge. Taking time to sit in a new seat, with someone who can help you understand and make sense of your ‘knots’ is what psychotherapists and counsellors can help with. I offer a free- no obligation - first call for you to get a sense of if I might be the therapist you feel you can work with.

A couple of days ago I was asked ‘what do you know you’ll be able to help clients with?’ Often there are many parts to the reason a client choose to see me for therapeutic support. Everyone has a unique story. Often though, within the uniqueness of their trauma or distress, I help clients rediscover their sense of self. This might mean that we work on their use of perfectionism, inner critic, loss of power & autonomy. The seed of hope in dark times can nourished by the right counselling relationship. Email me to get support. ********.

Spring scenes with lambs seems to be around every corner once I leave my Tonbridge office. They always catch my eye; glued to their mums side or gambolling carefree close by. I couldn’t resist stopping to watch this little new family. The lamb was glued to mums side, whilst she ate she was glancing up to check in on her baby. It looked like a secure and safe relationship. Inevitably this lamb will loose sight of mum, call for her, settle in reuniting and so it will go on. The Good Enough Mother. When this relationship has not been good enough for us it can ripple into our present and future. Counselling can help support you as you explore what happened, what you made of it and how it’s impacting you now.

Today is Day. As human beings we are designed to tell our story. Out loud. To another. Parts of our stories are often held inside untold, unheard and alone within us. This can cause anxiety and distress. It can feel as if we are unknown and living inauthentically. At times this can be masked, no one would know you’re carrying this aloneness or distress. Other times it bubbles out; unexpected, unchecked, disrupting day to day life. It can help to find that person you trust to tell your story to. Making isn’t selfish, it’s a vital part of being human.
