I spent a quiet hour today untangling Christmas lights from a tree, and then from themselves. It felt like a timely metaphor for the therapeutic process.
As I looked at the tree, knowing it had been enthusiastically dressed in the lights, I noticed resistance to tidying up this tired looking scene. The lights and the tree had made a great combination but it begged the question “where shall I begin?’.
It took a bit of investigating, frustration; one untangle forward, two untangles back. Moments of clarity when it looked like I could see the way out of the Christmas mess, disappointment when I found it was another wrong twist. There wasn't so much 'a place to begin', more 'a moment I started'.
Persisting when I felt stuck meant I got there in the end. The tree look exposed, the lights ready for a new start. I had taken that deep breath, and begun.
