There are two main issues going on when teens struggle with anxiety - something that I see time and again in my work with families.

There's the anxiety itself.

And then there's our response to it as parents.

When teens are anxious it can mean not going to school, or withdrawing from social groups, procrastinating over school work or escaping into things like video games and social media.

In more complex cases it can mean more hardwired patterns of anxiety - such as OCD, self harm and eating disorders.

All of these things are incredibly worrying.

And when we worry as parents, we start to do something called 'overfunctioning'.

In short, we try to fix everything.

And why wouldn't we?

It's heartbreaking to watch our children struggle.

It's frightening to think they're missing out on school and opportunities and what could be the best years of their lives.

So we try to accommodate their anxiety and make things easier for them.

Which works... until it doesn't.

Firstly, the more we try to do for our teens, the more resistant they become.

Getting up in the morning, getting dressed, having a shower, doing homework - all become emotional battles that often end in tears and frayed nerves.

Because... here's the thing, your teen does not want to let go of anxiety just yet. It's protecting them from situations that feel frightening.

The more you try to help them, the more they dig their heels in.

The more we do for our teens, the less they'll do for themselves.

And the less they do for themselves, the less confident they become in their own ability to cope.

Soon Mum and Dad become the people who always sort things out for them.

And that's not what we want if we want them to re-engage and start feeling happier, calmer and more confident.

I'll be teaching the fundamentals of over-functioning in my 5-day boot camp - Calmer Parenting of Anxious Teens - and how doing too much for your teen actually contributes to prolonging the anxiety.

More importantly, I'll be showing you how to stop the pattern of over-functioning - and the incredible transformation you'll experience in yourself and your teen that happens when you do.

I'd love you to join me - but hurry, registration closes on Tuesday 20th June

Spaces are limited so click below to find out more.

Heck knows it’s impossible to stay positive all the time. It’s also exhausting. We can allow ourselves the freedom of fully experiencing every emotion - up, down and in between - it’s all okay. That’s called being human.

But sometimes, expecting the worst, thinking negatively, shutting down positive feelings like hopes and dreams, becomes an unconscious habit. We get stuck in a rut.

So, just for today, check in and see what ‘channel’ your mind’s tuned into. And if you don’t like what you’re hearing, change it. Because you can.

I hear so many people use age as an excuse and say “I’m too old to…” Never too old. Never too late.

We all experience fear and despair at some point in our lives. These two emotions are often seen as roadblocks, deterring us from achieving our dreams… | 998 comments on LinkedIn

In 2017, my 12-yr old daughter developed severe and debilitating ear pain. The pain came in clusters and literally brought her to her knees, screaming in agony.

In the moment I felt absolutely powerless and useless. Nothing I said or did made any difference. I just had to sit with her until the pain subsided, which it always did... until the next time.

Over a span of 18 months we went from our local GP practice to the local hospital, to King's Hospital, and then a private paediatrician in London.

Finally, after 18 months, we were lucky enough to be seen by the UK's top neurosurgeon at Evelina Children's Hospital.

And we got a diagnosis: Geniculate and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. A rare condition with not much in the way of a guaranteed cure.

The neurosurgeon suggested strong pain relief and an approach of 'wait and see'. It was a condition my daughter might grow out of, he said. The alternative would be surgery to block a nerve that ran to her ear and jaw.

Although that didn't really move us closer to curing my daughter's ear pain, once we had the diagnosis things started to improve. Gradually, over the next year, the pain attacks subsided and my daughter recovered, just as the neurosurgeon said she would.

Why am I telling you this story?

Well... in my work with parents of teens with anxiety, I see that very same sense of powerless and helplessness that I felt, as they watch their children spiral into a frightening and seemingly bottomless pit of anxiety, worry and stress.

I know how my own nerves became frayed and paper thin, and how my emotional reserves were stretched to breaking point. But I also know, having gone through that experience with my daughter, that no one else could have done what I did. Not because I had any special powers or knew any special techniques at the time (this was before I trained as an RTT therapist).

It was simply because I was her mum. And that was enough.

Whatever your teen is going through, they need you. No one else can do what you're doing right now. But, they also need you to be mentally and physically at your best - to be strong for yourself as well as for them.

That's why it's important to get the support you need, to feel calm and balanced, to know that you're doing a good job, and be confident in your ability to cope with whatever your teen is going through.

And that's why I've created my Calmer Parenting of Anxious Teens boot camp to support parents and carers of pre-teens and teens with anxiety.

Over 5 days, I'll teach powerful and effective techniques to help you feel calmer, more confident and more balanced - even when things feel chaotic around you.

The boot camp starts next Monday, 22nd May, but I'm going to be offering two BONUS mini training sessions this week. Registration closes at midnight tonight and spaces are limited - so hurry to save your seat. Click below to find out more:
