LIFE WITH LEXI
I thought it was time to introduce you properly to our new rescue dog LEXI.
She's been with us 11 weeks now and it's amazing how her journey has parallels with our business.
Let me tell you a bit about her:
From the age of 3 weeks to 3 years and 3 months she lived in police kennels. She was well looked after but her only experience of life was her kennel and an exercise yard.She never got taken out for a walk in the woods or fields. She could only run or walk in the confines of the exercise yard so learnt to pace round and round in small circles.
She never socialised with other dogs, she never had any experience of life outside the police cells!
Her owner - probably in prison - refused to sign release papers for her to be rehomed so she stayed there until 3 and a bit when a judge finally released her (she'd been to court 3 times!). She went to foster care for 3 months where she had her first experience of being free. She was able to run around downstairs and in the garden but couldn't go upstairs as she didn't know how to climb the stairs and she was scared of them.
She was terrified of loud noises, cars, anything that moved unexpectedly - even a leaf blowing off a tree.
She came to us on 10th May and it's been a joy to see her explore and begin to enjoy life. She plays with other dogs now, it's like have a 3 1/2 year old puppy as until recently she'd had no training and no social skills. She is so happy to be able to play with others but like a puppy still doesn't know when to stop.
We can't let her off her lead to run unless it's a secure field as she has no recall despite 6 weeks of training classes. But she has learnt to 'leave it' - food on plates or dropped on the floor etc. and she runs upstairs to sleep by my bed too. She can walk nicely on her lead without pulling me, she's learning not to bark at every dog she sees and her recall on a long lead is better.
She still goes round in circles but bigger circles and will go off for a run across the field too, something she never did before.
So what are the parallels between Lexi and my business?
Lexi has now found her forever home. She gets all the support and understanding she needs to allow her to thrive and behave like a dog. With our support she's getting used to living life rather than just surviving in a kennel.
When vulnerable adults finally get the right property with the right support they begin to thrive too. There are thousands of people being kept in hospitals and mental institutions who are not mentally ill and shouldn't be there but they can't leave because there is nowhere for them to go.
Within months of someone moving into a supported living home and getting the support they need they begin to thrive too.
Just like Lexi. She's teaching us so much about how the right environment enriches lives.

There are so many property 'gurus' jumping on the supported living bandwagon and most of them haven't actually got a clue how it all works. They only know property. People are already being prosecuted and losing money because they don't understand how it all works or the regulation around it.
I know about property AND supported living and children's homes because I've lived experience, so I've decided to put it all into a book so that investors can invest in Supported Living and Children's safely.
It's not a quick process, I've almost finished writing the first draft, then they'll be 2nd and probably 3rd drafts before proof reading and editing

Steve Bartlett's 1% Diary .....
It was recommended to me because my ADHD brain finds it hard to keep things organised and follow tasks through to the end. I tend to go off on a tangent and start something else before the first thing is completed.
I'm not alone in this, it's just that there different types of people who in this world. 'The Creators and the Doers'.
Creators have come up with the new ideas, better ways of doing things, the doers are the ones who work out the detail needed to get things done. They love a spreadheet and planners like Asana make them happy.
I'm definitely the first one, the thought of an Excel spreadsheet makes me shiver and Asana makes me confused!
I like the way this diary/planner is laid out and if I actually remember to open it every day and fill in the right bits weekly I might get through it improving varying areas of my life by 1% every day. Wish me luck.
