42% of births in England are now by Caesarean section. 👇🏻
This isn’t about women choosing an “easy option”.
It’s about birth within a maternity system under strain.
The Maternity & Neonatal Infrastructure Review found:
• Over 50% of maternity units are rated unsatisfactory
• 42% need major repair or replacement
• 7% face risk of imminent breakdown
As Maria Elliott, Founder of The Mummy MOT, explains:
“Caesarean birth is now a reality for over four in ten women. We fully support a woman’s right to choose how she gives birth – but women must also be given clear, honest information about recovery.”
Research is clear:
• Birth type alone does not determine mental health outcomes
• Emergency Caesarean sections carry higher psychological risk due to trauma and urgency
• Early physical and mental health support makes the biggest difference to recovery
A Caesarean is major abdominal surgery. Healing involves multiple layers of tissue and can affect core strength, pelvic health, movement and scar function – long after the scar looks healed.
With the right postnatal assessment and support, women can recover well.
That support should be routine, not optional.
Birth is birth. Let’s prioritise mothers. 🩷
