We're so pleased to share this glowing review! ⭐

Knowing what makes a resident happy is essential for high-quality care. When we know how they like to spend their time, or who they like to spend it with, we can make everyday meaningful.

Thank you so much!

Sharing a sunny throwback to an afternoon walk we had around Dunorlan Park! ☀️

One of our clients wanted to go and feed the ducks, and there's no better place for local nature than Dunorlan.

Known for its landscaped Victorian gardens, large boating lake and picturesque views, this place comes alive in the warmer months.

It also offers wheelchair-friendly paths, making it accessible for all types of people. Let us know if you'd like us to accompany you on a walk! 🦆

Last week, we took two of our residents out to a Country Roads concert and had an absolute blast! 🎶

Keith and Jill are big fans of old country classics, so we were singing along all night.

It doesn't get much better than enjoying music with our local community. What a fab night out! 💚

According to the Royal National Institute of Blind People, one in five people aged 75 and over are living with sight loss.

This can creep in gradually, and as it's so subtle it can be hard to recognise when it's happening. Not only that, but sight loss can be really frightening, especially when it compromises independence.

If you have a loved one with blurred vision, difficulty reading or sensitivity to bright light, it may be time to book an eye test. Early diagnosis can prevent symptoms getting worse.

As carers, we know sight loss doesn't have to mean losing independence. We promise to work with your loved one to help them understand vision loss, and make sure life can be fulfilled from the comfort of their own home 💚

High-quality care means so much more than meeting basic needs.

It's about understanding our residents and their experiences, perspectives and voices. It's communicating in a way that lets the people in our care feel truly heard and respected.

And when residents share their voice, we can place their decisions at the forefront. Advocating for their needs is one of the most important things we can do for their wellbeing.

Our latest blog explores how our residents' voice makes a difference. Click the link below to read on! 🗣️ 💚

Why are care reviews so important? At Birchwood, we know how important it is to listen to our residents. Click the link to learn more.

Are you getting your summer garden ready? 🌹 🌼

There's lots of beginner-friendly plants to grow, and you don't need a big space. You could use pots, containers or window boxes to get started.

Some straight-forward plants include:

💐 Marigolds - these have a bright colour that help keep insects at bay.
🌻 Sunflowers - these grow fast and tall, making them very satisfying to watch!
🍅 Tomatoes - these grow well in containers, and require minimal effort.
🥔 Potatoes - these can grow in many places, like garden beds or grow bags, and tolerate UK weather well.

And if you're not sure what to start off, try growing from scraps! Take herb cuttings (like mint) and and root them in water or moist potting mix. Many herbs will root in just a couple of weeks, saving you money and reducing waste! 🌿

What is duty of care?

As carers, we have a duty to keep people safe from harm. We must act in their best interests, provide appropriate care and prevent avoidable risks.

Put simply, we treat people with dignity. We make sure all needs are listened to and respected, and people have a fulfilling, independent life from the comfort of their own home.

We do the right thing, every day, to provide the right care.

Memories are important, at any age. They become threads that connect us to who we are, where we've been, and the people we love.

That's why reminiscing is so important. Talking about past experiences helps us feel seen and valued.

At Birchwood House, this could mean flicking through a treasured photo album, listening to favourite songs or showing others your beautiful jewellery collection.

However you celebrate your memories, we're here to make sure they are heard! Find out more in our latest blog below 👇

Reminiscence is the process of talking about past experiences. But why is this important in our care home? Read on to find out.
