Birchwood Care Group

Birchwood Care Group Birchwood has been offering outstanding care to the elderly for over 30 years We don't have clients, we have residents. Our food is home cooked.

Our philosophy at Birchwood is simple: we provide a true home from home for the elderly and enable them to live as fulfilling lives as possible. Our fabulous building retains its air of being a family home. And we laugh and celebrate together, as a family.

Do you have a favourite song? 🎢

Maybe it's a song that sets your day off right, or one you've loved for years. Maybe it's linked to a childhood memory, or your wedding day.

Either way, songs have meaning. And for those with dementia, music helps express the feelings that words can perhaps no longer convey.

Our latest blog dives into the importance of music for dementia care. For re-directing moods, setting routines, and encouraging familiar memories, your favourite song has quite the impact.

Throwback to a little winter magic ❄️ No doubt you'll remember the light flurry of snow we had earlier this month!

Winter can feel quieter and slower, and while that can be comforting, it’s also a time when staying warm, well, and connected really matters.

Small things (a hot drink, a nourishing meal, a gentle stretch, or a friendly check-in) can make a big difference on colder days. Espeically when there isn't the magic of snow to lift our spirits πŸ™‚

Our Birchwood Care Services team are here to support people through the winter months in practical, thoughtful ways, helping clients stay comfortable, independent, and cared for at home... whatever the weather brings!

We come back to this quote all the time, because it's true.

Joy and creativity is never limited by age, and these qualities are with us at every stage of life.

We encourage our residents (and everyone at Birchwood) to keep thinking, keep hoping, and keep dreaming.

Imagination has no age πŸ’š

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, a cause very important to us at Birchwood Care Services.

This is a group of eye conditions which damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss. And whilst the risk of glaucoma increases after age 40, it becomes especially threatening after 60.

We understand how isolating glaucoma can feel, and we want you to know you are not alone.

We are here to help you manage not just the condition, but the emotional and physical challenges that come alongside it.

If you're worried about navigating vision loss, please do reach out πŸ’š

Every gift to The Glaucoma Foundation gets us closer to a cure. You can start to fundraise for TGF today to advance sight-saving research.

Birchwood House will always be a place for intergenerational relationships!

By welcoming younger visitors, we can make sure everyone learns something new. Grandparents can share their wisdom, and grandchildren can teach new skills.

It's what makes our home so diverse, and gives everyone an opportunity to create those shared memories πŸ’š

We've been inspired by the recent weather to start the week with a much-loved wintry poem by Robert Frost: Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening ❄️

This piece invites us to pause, observe, and appreciate the world as it is, even if just for a moment.

Poetry has a special way of stirring memory and imagination, and many of our care services clients enjoy revisiting familiar verses that feel timeless and comforting. We hope this one brings a sense of calm to you all as the week begins.

"Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it q***r
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep."

– Robert Frost, 1922

We've also shared the link to a great live rendition of the poem (read by Shane Morris) in the comments below πŸ”—β¬‡οΈ

A little throwback to one of our favourite activities 🌸

There’s something quietly special about flowers. The colours, the scents, and the simple act of arranging them all invite us to slow down and be present.

For many of our residents, they can bring back memories of gardens tended, gifts given, and moments shared with loved ones.

Floral arranging also offers a peaceful moment for creativty, engaging the senses and encouraging gentle movement. Not to mention, the finished product was a beautiful pop of colour and nature for their rooms!

We were incredibly touched and grateful to our local one stop for the amazing contribution of donated flowers, which amde this extra special πŸ’

As loved ones get older, it's important to pay close attention to their wellbeing.

Sometimes, they may not openly express their needs, or even be aware they may need some additional support.

So, what signs indicate your loved ones may need extra help?

πŸ’š Neglecting personal hygiene - this could indicate they are struggling with daily activities
πŸ’š Untidy homes or ignored chores - this may signal housework has become too overwhelming to manage alone
πŸ’š Physical changes of mobility - this could reveal underlying health concerns
πŸ’š Unpaid bills and difficulty managing finances - this could indicate cognitive decline, especially with forgotten payments
πŸ’š Social withdrawal - this could signal both mental and physical illness, so it's important to encourage social interaction and emotional support.

Recognising the signs can make a huge difference in the quality of life for your loved ones, and these difficult conversations can't be left unsaid.
