There’s something about the bond between animals and their carers that goes far deeper than words can explain.

Pets were not much part of my childhood and I always swore when I could I’d be sure to make up for the lack of a furry companion. Several cats and these two later, we - and now I - have been blessed with the trust, dependency, love, affection, loyalty and sheer joy of paws, tummies and tails.

The one on the left joined me five years ago this weekend. The one on the right became part of our family 27 years ago and stayed for twelve seeing my sons through childhood and beyond. Never forgotten, I’m pretty certain Scamper went to his grave knowing more about some of the boys’ inner worlds than I’ll ever know.

It took a while before I was ready for the minx that is Truffle but now I can’t imagine life without her. And the same goes, so it seems, for many of my clients. Her work diary is pretty full but there’s always time and space for anyone in need of her unconditional love and attention.

This afternoon saw me thoroughly enjoying the stage production of “Everybody’s talking about Jamie” an action packed 2+ hours of music, dancing, singing, humour and spectacle punching out the full gamut of social and personal messages.

Based on the true story of Jamie Campbell, acceptance, identity, difference, culture, friendship, body image, choice, secrets and lies, bravery, belief and working out who we are - all and more bashed out for consideration and question.

Language a bit “fruity” for younger ears and some of the physical humour far from subtle, but there’s something to be said for young people seeing it in one form or another.

Our lovely weekend started the day before these were taken and still has tomorrow to come.

When one of your oldest friends visits from down under and you’ve not seen each other for more than a decade, you make the effort.

If you can combine it with ticking off a new stretch of coastline you make sure you do. The weather Gods surpassed themselves and nostalgia upped its game.

Spent this last day of this hardest of years taking in the bracing Hampshire salty air and giving thanks that despite all the sadness, loss, trauma and uncertainty, the tide will rise and fall and the sun is always with us no matter how hidden it can seem. 2024 will bring its fair share of trials and tribulations, but pup and I wish us all at least some times of peace and joy xx

A year ago tonight I was at the most moving and beautiful light show at Leonardslee. I don’t know if it’s on this year, but if it is, then it’s worth a visit. At a time when our world continues to be in so much chaos and seems to find it as hard as ever to accept difference, it’s humbling to take a moment to pause and take a perspective of the globe as a whole.

Truffle worked extra hard this morning listening to clients for 4 back to back hours.

No rain today so an afternoon romp in the leaves (and a not-so-hidden in my pocket treat or two) were definitely deserved.

Let’s hope the second half of November brings more bright, colourful days than the first.

November is always my busiest month for both new referrals and returning clients, and this year is following that pattern as strongly as ever. The difference now in my practice is, however, the number of boys, young men and older men making contact. Whether it’s because it’s at last becoming more “ok” for men and boys to verbalise and access emotional and mental health need and support, or whether there are more numbers, it’s hard to tell, but if we’re genuinely moving towards “bigs boys can and do cry” then that has to be something of a positive shift in our culture.

Seems I’m in danger of morphing into a cat lady!

This time yesterday I was idly surfing time waiting for my tea to cool when I stumbled across a local NextDoor post from someone asking if anyone could rehome their cats as they’d lost their jobs and were struggling to feed them.

Truffle wasn’t keen on taking on three felines so offered to buy some much needed food and litter. Fast forward 24 hours and I’ve set up this local group with members coming in thick and fast wanting to help animals stay with their loved ones - and vice versa.

Yet another reminder that there’s still so much kindness in the world.

We’re all special with hearts and souls and talents somewhere within us. But today I was moved by the special hearts, souls and talents of two of my young clients who - very modestly - mentioned that they have been selected to play “The Last Post” this weekend. It’s sometimes easy to think our young have distanced themselves from history but I’m certain my young person in their 20s and the other in their teens, aren’t alone in caring, respecting, honouring and investing in a better, more peaceful world.

October saw me following up Venice in July by doing all things cultural in Pisa, Florence, Cortona, Assisi and Montepulciano.

Scores and scores of photos in case I ever need reminding of such a wonderful time in this most glorious country.

The company and generosity of a 40+ year bestie not only made it happen but made it sing.

Delighted to have been asked - and been able to agree - to deliver some upcoming teaching at The Counselling Centre, Tunbridge Wells.

It’s where I first cut my training teeth many years ago and have always held it close to my professional heart.

What’s more, I’ll be delivering a Family Systems module. Couldn’t be happier to know that this most fundamental start to all our lives is now on the syllabus.

Last day of September definitely deserves its moment.
