You might hear both terms at the dentist, but did you know that acid erosion and tooth decay are two different ways your teeth can be damaged?

👉 Tooth Decay is caused by sugar.
When we consume sugary foods or drinks, bacteria in the mouth produce acids that attack the enamel. Over time, this leads to cavities (holes) in the teeth.

👉 Acid Erosion, on the other hand, is caused by acidic foods and drinks — like fizzy drinks, citrus fruits, vinegar-based sauces, and even diet versions of soft drinks.
These acids soften and wear away the enamel directly, even if there’s no sugar involved. Over time, this can lead to thinning teeth, sensitivity, and enamel loss.

How to protect your teeth:

Limit how often you consume sugary and acidic foods and drinks

Don’t brush immediately after acidic foods. Wait at least 30 minutes

Drink water after meals

Use a fluoride toothpaste to help strengthen enamel

Understanding the difference helps you take control of your oral health and keep your smile strong for years to come!
